DJI Mini 2 Firmware Update – Support for DJI Smart Controller

DJI Mini 2 Firmware Update - Support for DJI Smart Controller

DJI has just released a new firmware update for its DJI Mini 2 drone that adds support for the DJI Smart Controller and an optimized gimbal FPV mode. Let’s take a closer look at it!

The DJI Mini 2 is a foldable, lightweight, and very compact drone that came out in November 2020. With a similar size to the Mavic Mini, this tiny drone can capture footage at up to 4K UHD at 30fps, 2.7K at up to 60fps since its latest firmware update earlier this year, and RAW pictures.

To further improve its drone capabilities, DJI has just released a new firmware update (v01.03.0000) that includes a couple of new features.

DJI Mini 2 now compatible with the DJI Smart Controller

The biggest headline of this firmware update is probably the added support of the DJI Smart Controller. Users will no longer need to plug their phone into the remote controller to operate the Mini 2. It means that you’ll be able to move more quickly and have access to a bigger screen. Indeed, the built-in display of the DJI Smart Controller is 5.5″, with a brightness of 1000cd/m² and a 1080P resolution.

To make the DJI Mini 2 compatible with the Smart Controller, you’ll need to have the newest aircraft firmware installed (v01.03.0000), as well as the latest DJI Fly App and Smart Controller firmware (v01.01.00.58 or later).

Last but not least, DJI also optimized and improved other features of the Mini 2, including:

  • Optimized gimbal FPV mode to improve the flying experience.
  • Optimized auto-discharge process for the battery. Refer to DJI Mini 2 User Manual for more information.
  • Improved flight stability and greatly reduced quantity of compass calibration prompts.

Unfortunately, there is no information whether the Mini 2 will ever be compatible with the Motion Controller, which has been introduced with the DJI FPV drone (our review here) and which allows for some very intuitive flight controls.

Price and availability

This firmware update (v01.03.0000) for the Mini 2, Smart Controller, and Fly App are all available now. To process the update, connect your smartphone to the provided remote controller, launch the DJI Fly App, and update your drone.

What do you think about this firmware update? Do you think it is useful to purchase the Smart Controller that costs more than the drone itself? Don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments down below!
