LumenArc Active Diffusion System Explained

April 18th, 2023 Jump to Comment Section

LumenArc just introduced the Active Diffusion frames a few weeks ago. Available in two different sizes, these electronically adjustable light diffusion frames come with a hand-held controller that holds V-Mount batteries. You can modify the diffuser’s opacity to control the level of diffusion for your specific shot. At this year’s NAB we had the chance to talk to Brian Lang from LumenArc who showed us a demo of this brand-new product. Let’s take a closer look at these lighting modifiers!

In 2017 Zylight in cooperation with Chimera, brought electronically adjustable light diffusion to the market for the first time. It was first shown at Cine Gear 2017. Now, 6 years later, we are seeing a completely new and rather unique light modifier.

LumenArc Active Diffusion Frames

There are two different LumenArc Active Diffusion frames models: the standard frame size is 100x100cm/40×40in, and the smaller model is 61x91cm/24x36in. The frames are made of steel, aluminum, and shock-resistant carbon fiber, and also feature scratch-resistant polycarbonate.

The smaller model is 61x91cm/24x36in with1,9kg/4,2lbs, and the larger model is 100x100cm/40×40in with 5,9kg/13,1lbs. Sometimes diffusion frames have a rough life in a lighting truck or on a film set, but those high-tech frames should be treated with care and some respect, especially when you look at their price tag.

Power for the Active Diffusion Frames

The Active Diffusion frame has a handheld controller that lets you adjust diffusion strength from 0 to 100% with the turn of a knob. Although the controller comes with a standard AC power supply, LumenArc recommends using a V-Mount battery via the included D-Tap power cable. One V-Mount 98Wh battery should run the larger frame for 19 hours and the smaller frame for 35 hours.

Price and availability

The LumenArc Active Diffusion frames are now available for pre-order and should start shipping in 1-2 months. The frame comes in a protective nylon case, and includes the handheld controller, the power supply, a V-Lock power supply bracket, power and data cables, and a controller lanyard.

The smaller 61x91cm/24x36in model retails for $1,899, while the larger 100x100cm/40×40in model will set you back $3,299.
