OCTOPUS RAW Studio is a plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro that offers a better workflow for ProRes RAW and CinemaDNG footage. It features a bespoke and configurable raw pipeline that exposes a plethora of raw parameters and features such as ISO and WB adjustment, highlight recovery, textures, and more.

Apart from the partially debayered Blackmagic RAW, which has been an affordable way of getting into raw video for years, I feel like internal raw video is finally being democratized, and it is getting into more and more affordable camera models.

Hand in hand with this process, we need to have easy and effective ways to work with raw video footage in post-production. This time, I will not rant about the lack of native ProRes RAW support in DaVinci Resolve. This article aims to take a quick look at a plugin from OCTOPUS CINEMA that improves the raw video workflow in Adobe Premiere Pro.

OCTOPUS CINEMA

You might remember OCTOPUS CINEMA from one of my previous articles. The self-funded, UK-based company is currently developing their digital camera, the OCTOPUS16. As Russell Newman from OCTOPUS CINEMA (OC) told me, they are now in the final stages of production with the OCTOPUS16. They have upgraded the processor (Compute Module 4 to Compute Module 5) to support internal 4K 60fps raw video.

In the meantime, OC recently launched the above-mentioned plugin for a better raw video workflow in Adobe Premiere Pro called OCTOPUS RAW Studio. Let’s take a look at the details.

OCTOPUS RAW Studio

The built-in raw video panel in Premiere Pro only offers basic adjustments such as exposure and color space. There is currently no option to change the white balance, ISO, or perform a highlight recovery.

The OCTOPUS RAW Studio offers a bespoke and configurable raw pipeline that exposes a plethora of raw parameters and features. As OC puts it, their RAW Studio takes Premiere’s raw video handling to the level of dedicated grading software such as DaVinci Resolve.

The plugin will work with ProRes RAW and CinemaDNG formats. It adds the possibility to set WB and ISO, as well as apply highlight recovery to get access to a wider dynamic range.
