Prolycht Orion 300 FS Light Firmware Update – New X/Y Coordinates Mode

Prolycht Orion 300 FS Light Firmware Update – New X/Y Coordinates Mode

Prolycht has just issued a new firmware update for the Orion 300 FS color LED light: version 2.02.13 adds a new mode for color selection based on X/Y coordinates in the CIE1931 color space. In addition, a free Prolycht Dome softbox is included with new purchases of the 300 FS in April 2022 (U.S. and Canada only).

The Prolycht Orion 300 FS color LED is a unique light in an otherwise quite saturated market: it uses RGBACL (Red Green Blue Amber Cyan Lime) diodes instead of RGBWW ones.

With this trick, the Orion 300 FS is able to produce a wide range of color temperatures (2,000K to 20,000K) while delivering up to 31,090lux @ 1m with the standard reflector. In addition, it has a wide range of Rosco/Lee filters built-in.

The Orion 300 FS was introduced in 2021 and has received several firmware updates since then. And now another one seems to be due, adding a whole new feature to this versatile light.

Prolycht Orion 300 FS: New firmware

The new firmware now adds a feature that, according to the press release, has been very much requested: the X/Y coordinates mode. With this, you can now select any desired color via X/Y coordinates in the CIE1931 color space (wikipedia). This mode not only works on the ballast, but also via DMX or via the accompanying ChromaLink app (android / iOS).

Along the way, the company has also fixed a number of issues and updated some features that were already available. Here is a complete rundown of the new and updated features of the Orion 300 FS:

  • Core v2.02.13
  • Driver v4.9
  • ADDED New CIE X/Y mode, set colors using X/Y coordinates in CIE1931 colorspace
  • ADDED Power-up calibration can be switched off in menu
  • UPDATED DMX protocols to include CIE X/Y mode
  • UPDATED Orion now remembers prior setting of IP address and subnet
  • UPDATED ArtNet application full IP setting enabled
  • FIXED DMX mode 3 bug creating continuous power cycling
  • FIXED Improved user interface and other minor bugs

The free ChromaLink App has also been updated with:

  • ADDED X/Y mode control interface
  • IMPROVED Color Picker mode supports real-time sampling
  • IMPROVED Recording mode adds white balance & tint adjustment (IOS devices)
  • IMPROVED Color & Brightness accuracy in Color Picker & Recording modes

A very cool feature of the Orion 300 FS is that you can sample and then play back the changing colors of a scene recorded via a phone or tablet using the ChromaLink app. The Orion 300 FS will replicate the colors (and transitions) seen in that shot, which is great for virtual studio work, for example.

The update comes free of charge and can be downloaded from Prolycht’s website. Please follow the instructions in the provided Readme.txt file exactly so that the update can be installed smoothly. You will need a USB stick for this.

Like many other modern LED COB lights, the Orion 300 FS features a standard Bowens mount that can accept a wide range of accessories from Prolycht as well as third-party manufacturers. This makes it easy to source relatively affordable light modifiers and use them with this fixture.

Promotion during April 2022

Speaking of modifiers: If you’re based in the U.S. or Canada and are considering buying this Prolycht Orion 300 FS, now’s a good time, as the company is including a free Prolycht Dome Softbox (valued $190) with every new purchase in April.
