RED V-RAPTOR Firmware 1.5.0beta Released - Adds Gio Scope and More

RED has just rolled out firmware 1.5.0beta for their V-RAPTOR camera platform. It brings the ability to edit fps/shutter/format lists, adds the Gio Scope RAW-based exposure tool, and more. It is now available as a free download on RED’s website.

After launching the original 8K Vista Vision model in September 2021, the RED V-RAPTOR series expanded considerably and now includes 4 different models: V-RAPTOR 8K VV, V-RAPTOR XL 8K VV and their recently released S35 counterparts. Apparently, the company is fully committed to improving their flagship camera series via incremental firmware updates.

Back in January, the V-RAPTOR cameras officially gained Camera-to-Cloud support for production firmware 1.4.2, which was replaced by version 1.4.4–without significant changes–only a few days ago. However, the company also introduced Beta firmware 1.5.0, which looks a little more relevant. So let’s take a look at what’s new!

RED V-RAPTOR: firmware 1.5.0beta

One of the most interesting features coming with firmware 1.5.0beta is the addition of Gio Scope RAW-based False Color. This one-of-a-kind exposure tool, inherited from the DSMC2 series, already made its way back to the RED KOMODO with firmware 1.7.0beta. At the time, CEO Jarred Land claimed that implementation on V-RAPTOR would take “a while”. And here it is!

Users can now edit frame rate, shutter speed/angle and format lists, and perform firmware updates via USB-C without using a CFexpress Type-B card. Also, a couple of improvements refer to ND filters. I wonder whether these only affect the V-RAPTOR XL cameras or if they will also pertain to the standard models once RED releases their upcoming RF to PL adapter with built-in electronic NDs.
