RED V-RAPTOR XE Announced – Half the Frame Rates, Half the Price

Ahead of IBC 2025, RED has just announced the new V-RAPTOR XE, where “E” stands for Essential. As the name suggests, it’s a stripped-down version of the original V-RAPTOR [X], but with half the frame rates and without Extended highlights and Phantom Track modes. This more affordable model is now available to pre-order in Nikon Z or Canon RF mount for just $14,995.

Introduced back in January 2024, the V-RAPTOR [X] is RED’s ultimate powerhouse for high-resolution, high-frame rate capture. Indeed, it boasts a large-format, Vista Vision Global Shutter sensor capable of capturing 8K .R3D footage at up to 120 fps. Following the acquisition of RED, Nikon introduced Z mount versions of the V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO-X, integrating their versatile lens mount into RED’s ecosystem. Now, the Japanese company is making another move to appeal to cinematographers by making the V-RAPTOR platform even more accessible.

RED V-RAPTOR XE – Big-League tech to Indie filmmakers

In a nutshell, the new V-RAPTOR XE shares exactly the same compact body, robust connectivity, and 8K Vista Vision Global Shutter sensor as the original V-RAPTOR [X], but with halved frame rates. This means you can shoot in:

8K up to 60 fps
6K up to 80 fps
4K up to 120 fps
2K up to 240 fps

Other missing features include Extended Highlights and Phantom Track modes. However, the former has its own limitations when it comes to fast motion, while the latter is only really useful if you’re into virtual production. On top of this, the XE is not as fully-featured when it comes to broadcast-specific functionalities.

Still, this is great news for users who were considering buying the original V-RAPTOR [X], as they can now access most of the same technology for half the price. Additionally, it could be an exciting upgrade for KOMODO-X users looking to step up their game.

Moreover, RED has also announced that the XE version will feature faster boot-up times and less power consumption. However, these features will come soon via a firmware update.

The camera is available in both Nikon Z and Canon RF mount options. If I were to buy it new, I would definitely opt for the Nikon Z mount, as it offers more versatility in terms of lens choice as well as better integration for lens customization and control. However, it’s nice to see that RED is still supporting users who have heavily invested in Canon RF glass.

Price and availability

The new V-RAPTOR XE is now available to pre-order from B&H and CVP. The body-only option is priced at $14,995, making it $3,000 cheaper than the rolling shutter V-RAPTOR 8K S35, and $15,000 more affordable than the Global Shutter V-RAPTOR [X].

The camera is also bundled with the DSMC3 RED Touch 7.0” LCD Monitor, Z or RF to PL Adapter with eND, and Outrigger Handle as a Cine Essentials Pack for $19,995.
