REDCINE-X PRO 61 Beta Released – Automatic Mask Line Adjust to Fix Sensor Stitching Issue

REDCINE-X PRO 61 Beta Released – Automatic Mask Line Adjust to Fix Sensor Stitching Issue

RED has just introduced version 61.0 Beta of REDCINE-X PRO. The software now gets a new Automatic Mask Line Adjust feature to help mitigate the sensor stitching line that might appear at the center of the frame when shooting with RED Vista Vision cameras. Download is free for all users.

After the original V-RAPTOR 8K VV was launched in September 2021, some users noticed a thin vertical line crossing the center of the frame in some of their shots captured under extremely specific lighting conditions. The issue is related to the sensor design which, as in most large-format cameras, stitches together multiple sensor wafers to obtain a larger light-sensitive surface.

Hence, RED first came up with a hardware solution consisting of a flare guard that needs to be installed inside the sensor cavity. Now, the company is introducing a software-based solution to further help users deal with this extremely rare problem. So let’s take a closer look!

REDCINE-X PRO 61 Beta—Automatic Mask Line Adjust

The new feature is called Automatic Mask Line Adjust and, according to RED’s CEO Jarred Land, it can help remove the sensor stitching line on footage shot on their MONSTRO or V-RAPTOR 8K VV cameras, but also other large-format cameras featuring a stitched sensor design, such as ARRI’s Alexa LF and Mini LF.

This new option can be found in the Image tab in REDCINE-X PRO under the RAW Enhancements settings. Since there’s a very small chance of incurring this issue, the option is turned off by default. However, it’s nice to know that it’s there in case you need it. What’s not clear, however, is if this software-based fix is a valid alternative to having a flare guard installed on the camera body.
