Sennheiser Profile—New USB Condenser Microphone Released

Sennheiser launched a new USB condenser microphone that is designed for streamers, video podcasters, YouTubers, video journalists, or any other content creators. It is very simple to use-just plug it into your computer and you can start recording right away. The Sennheiser Profile retails with a desktop stand for $129 or as a streaming set with a boom arm for $199. Let’s have a closer look at the USB microphone.

Sennheiser is a German-based manufacturer with a history of over 75 years for audio products, like the first shotgun microphone MD82 released in 1956, or the iconic headphones HD25 from 1988. Founded in 1945 near the city of Hannover, it continues to be run as a family business, now in its third generation.

But after several decades of developing professional high-end audio equipment, it seems that Sennheiser is focusing more and more on the consumer market of YouTubers and even smartphone shooters. For example, about two years ago, they introduced the MKE200 and the MKE400 shotgun microphones and pre-configured mobile filmmaking kits. But now let’s check out the new USB-mic:

Sennheiser Profile condenser microphone

The USB-C powered condenser microphone features a cardioid condenser capsule with an easy-to-use plug-and-play concept-no additional audio interfaces are required. Created for podcasting and streaming, the Profile microphone has four basic controls on the front side:

  • Gain control to adjust the level of the microphone
  • Mix control to balance the microphone with your audio devices
  • Volume control to set your headphone monitoring level
  • Mute button to turn the microphone on and off

It also features a desktop stand with an adjustable tilt function that has a self-locking joint, so you can aim the mic directly toward the sound source. Depending on your preferences, the Profile includes either a desktop stand or a long boom arm for further positioning around your desktop.

Plug-and-play

Sometimes setting up a podcast session or live stream can be stressful, and capturing audio with several interfaces or complex software can be annoying. USB-powered microphones have all the necessary components built within the microphone, requiring only a single connection to begin recording your audio. Your device will automatically recognize the Profile, making it a simple plug-and-play setup.

Sound

Built around the German-engineered capsule, the Profile is supposed to deliver a natural, warm sound that should emphasize the body and presence of the human voice. To ensure you’re getting the best sound, the multi-function LED ring turns from green to orange to indicate when your signal is too hot. As always, it sounds seducingly easy, but it must be tested in the real world to see if the sound meets expectations.

Control

The ability to control your sound with the twist of a dial could make a difference when you’re streaming live. Gain control allows you to adjust the sensitivity of the microphone, setting the level for your session. Mix control allows you to balance the levels between your microphone and your device audio so you can monitor what matters to you. The volume control gives you quick access to adjust your headphone level while a soft-touch mute button lets you silence your microphone.

Form and function

Quality audio is also about microphone placement. The Profile Streaming Set features a boom arm designed for on-camera applications. Integrated cable management and an included 3m/10ft USB-C cable provide flexibility with positioning and help to keep your workspace clean. For best results, place the Profile within 15cm/6in of the sound source to ensure clarity in your sound.
