SmallRig has just introduced its first wireless follow focus system, the MagicFIZ. It includes a focus motor, a handwheel controller, and a handgrip for different configurations. The claimed working range is 100m/328ft. The Basic Kit retails for $299.

Chinese accessory manufacturer SmallRig is rapidly expanding their focus from rigging solutions to a whole camera and lighting ecosystem. Only this year, the company introduced their first COB LED spotlights, the RC120 and RC220 series, and also launched three V-lock batteries (50, 99, and 155Wh).

Although they already offer a manual follow focus accessory, the SmallRig Mini Follow Focus, their newly released MagicFIZ system seems to confirm their intention of adventuring into other market segments. Let’s take a closer look.

SmallRig MagicFIZ – features

The SmallRig MagicFIZ is a wireless lens control system working in the 2.4GHz frequency range. According to the company, it can reach operating distances of up to 100m/328ft, providing a stable connection with low latency.

While different pre-bundled packs are available, the full wireless kit consists of a focus motor, a handwheel controller, and a handgrip. All units can be powered via USB-C (5-16.8V), which is a huge advantage over the Micro USB interface of the similarly priced Tilta Nucleus Nano (which, by the way, will soon have a successor).

The focus motor comes with a built-in rod clamp, has a claimed high-torque output of 5 Newton meters (which should be enough to pull the iris and focus on cinema lenses), and can also be powered using NP-F style cells via a dedicated quick-release battery plate.

The handwheel controller and handgrip can be used together or independently to control multiple sets of focus motors. The handwheel controller features a controlling knob to adjust the iris or focus distance and also has a built-in 1400mAh battery that should provide up to 20 hours of running time, according to SmallRig. The unit comes with a marking disk, and additional ones can be purchased separately.

On the other hand, the handgrip takes interchangeable Canon LP-E6 batteries and can be attached to your camera rig via a NATO clamp. Just like the handwheel controller, it integrates a 0.96” OLED screen to display settings.

The SmallRig MagicFIZ packs some of the advanced features you would expect from a prosumer follow focus system, such as the ability to set A/B markers or trigger start/stop recording for a list of selected cameras (you can check compatibility here).

The SmallRig MagicFIZ Wireless Follow Focus System is now available to purchase from B&H and CVP and comes in different pre-bundled options. Pricing is as follows:
