Chinese accessories manufacturer SmallRig has just launched its SmallRig RED Komodo cage. This cage consists of four removable sides – a baseplate, a top plate, and two side plates – and it is made out of magnesium alloy for a weight of only 163g. Let’s take a closer look at one of the most affordable RED Komodo cage on the market!
After the SmallRig Sony a7S III Cage, the cage for the FUJIFILM X-T4, SmallRig is back with its cage solution for the RED Komodo. And since we’re talking about SmallRig here, this cage is really affordable without compromising on quality.
The SmallRig RED Komodo cage consists of four parts made out of magnesium alloy: a baseplate, a top plate, and two side plates.
Each part is removable, which is handy if you need to save some weight. However, the entire cage is pretty lightweight at only 163 grams.
The RED Komodo attaches to the SmallRig cage’s baseplate via two screws: a 1/4″-20 and a 3/8″-16 screw. As a nice addition, SmallRig put some padding, so you don’t scratch the bottom of your shiny new camera.
The bottom of the baseplate features nine 1/4″-20 and one 3/8″-16 mounting point so that you can attach your favorite quick release plate. There are also two built-in magnetic little wrenches and a hex key next to the bottom mounting points.
The two side plates attach to the baseplate via two screws, then another screw goes to the side of the camera, and two screws secure the top plate to the side plates. It won’t go anywhere for sure!
The side plates of the RED Komodo cage feature four 1/4″-20 threaded holes and one ARRI Rosette. The side rail also acts as a NATO rail if you want to attach accessories directly to it.
Finally, the top plate of the cage features six 1/4″-20 threaded holes and one 3/8″-16 mounting point in the center with ARRI locking pins. The center part of the top plate also acts as a NATO rail so that you can mount a top handle or other accessories directly to it.
The SmallRig RED Komodo cage is available for pre-order now for $79.90. It is estimated to start shipping on December 12, 2020. For more information, please visit SmallRig’s website here.
