At IBC 2026, Nino spoke with Julien from Sony about the RM-DP7 and RM-DP5, the two monitors that double as remote control units for the company’s Cinema Line cameras. The conversation filled in what the launch material left open: why there is no built-in wireless, how the units actually connect to the camera, and how much of the camera you can really operate from them. Julien also addressed the question many of our readers asked first, which is when FX6 and BURANO owners get to join in.
We covered the announcement of the Sony DP7 and DP5 shortly before the show, and it turned out to be one of our most-read pieces of the pre-IBC week. As a reminder, these are a 7-inch and a 5-inch monitor, both rated at 2,000 nits, that deliver a color-accurate feed of what the camera is capturing while letting you change its settings from a distance. At launch, they work with the FX30, FX2, FX3, and the new FX5. Julien described the target as drama, commercial work, and any production where color accuracy and focus accuracy are critical.
According to Julien, the units serve two purposes. They can be used as a plain external monitor when all you want is a precise idea of the final image, and they become a control surface when the camera is out of reach. His examples were a camera on a crane or mounted to a car, where you still need to pull focus and adjust settings without touching the body.
Brightness is identical on both models at 2,000 nits, so the choice between them comes down to size and connectivity rather than daylight visibility.
The connection is simpler than some expected. There is no proprietary cable: camera control runs over USB-C, while the image arrives separately over HDMI or SDI. In practice, that means two cables between monitor and camera. Sony’s product page additionally lists 1000BASE-T Ethernet as a wired control route.
The DP5 is HDMI only and can be powered over USB-C or from a battery. The DP7 offers both SDI and HDMI, which Julien positioned as the option for higher-end sets that require a locking connector.
Nino’s first reaction to the announcement was to assume that remote control monitors would be wireless by default. They are not, and Julien explained the reasoning briefly. Productions have different needs for latency and range, wireless standards change, and links need updating, and an integrated radio would have taken up space. Sony chose to concentrate on the image and the control layer and leave transmission to third parties.
For now, Sony recommends two systems: the Hollyland Pyro Ultra and the Teradek Bolt 7. Julien was clear that this is a recommendation rather than a closed list. The technology is open, so other manufacturers can add compatibility, but these two are the ones Sony knows to work. Sony states on its product page that a third-party wireless unit allows both lens control and video transmission at up to 4K.
The monitors do not replicate the camera menus. They run their own interface, designed to sit on top of different camera generations, which is how a single unit can talk to both an FX3 and an FX5 despite their different menu structures. A home button brings up the BIG6 screen, where iris, ISO, white balance, and the other main shooting parameters can be changed from afar.
Lens control is part of the package. Focus can be driven on E-mount lenses with electronic contacts, and zoom is available with compatible power zoom lenses. Julien named the FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS as one example that can be zoomed remotely.
Sony already offers the Monitor & Control app, which is comprehensive and popular, so Nino asked why someone happy with it should spend this kind of money. Julien gave two reasons. The first is the panel: each unit is individually calibrated at the factory, with the aim of showing the image a colorist would expect to see. The second is focus pulling, where he considers a dedicated device a better tool than an iPad. Nino added that the app is always a wireless connection, and Julien agreed that a wired link is simply more reliable.
Asked specifically who the HDMI-only DP5 is for, Julien pointed to the native communication between the monitors and Sony’s cameras as the advantage: it is aimed at people who want full control over their camera settings remotely.
The camera sends its base image to the monitor, so if you shoot log, the monitor receives log. Up to 16 user LUTs can then be applied on the monitor side. They are imported from an SD card directly into the monitor rather than being pulled across from the camera, so a camera’s LUT library and the monitor’s need to be managed separately.
On calibration, Julien explained that a 2,000-nit panel generates heat, and heat causes chromatic drift. Sensors inside the unit track that drift, and the monitor corrects for it continuously during operation. There is currently no way for users to recalibrate manually. Julien said this would need to be studied and that Sony is collecting feedback on it.
Nino asked about a common set scenario: a focus puller on a DP5 and a director watching a DP7, both fed from the same camera. That is not possible. The system is limited to one monitor per camera, and Julien said an image loop-through for daisy chaining is not something Sony is currently developing.
Physically, the monitors carry the silver finish of the Cinema Line bodies. They can be mounted either way up, so cables can exit upward or downward depending on the rig, and there are mounting points at the top and bottom for a tripod or for an adapter holding a wireless unit. Julien had no weather rating figures to share, but said the monitors are built to withstand difficult conditions.
Many of our readers have asked why the FX6 and BURANO are not supported from day one. Julien’s answer was that Sony wanted to start with the other Cinema Line cameras, since this is a new product line, and gather feedback before releasing a version for the higher-end production cameras. Sony’s press release places that firmware update in the second half of 2027.
Nino, who owns an FX9, used the opportunity to ask for VENICE, VENICE 2, and FX9 support to be added to the roadmap, given how widely those cameras are still used. Julien’s reply: “We are taking any feedback.”
Julien quoted £2,100 / €2,500 for the 5-inch DP5 and £2,800 / €3,300 for the 7-inch DP7. US pricing is $2,299.99 and $3,099.99, respectively. Both are available for pre-order now and are expected in stores at the beginning of January 2027.
