YC Onion presented the Pineta Pro monopod, an upgrade from the Pineta, at this year’s NAB 2024. Graham Ehlers Sheldon had a chance to talk to Sandy Chen at the YC Onion booth and get the details. Let’s see what’s new in the upgrade.
YC Onion has produced some interesting products like the YC Onion Pineta Peak Tripods and their “KIWI” Wireless Microphone System, which we saw at NAB 2023. Here we take a look at the upgrade to the original Pineta monopod.
The biggest update with the Pineta Pro monopod is the new trigger lock, enabling you to raise or lower the monopod with one hand – simply press and slide to extend or retract, and release to lock. There is an additional safety lock, so should somebody bump into the monopod, the trigger lock remains locked.
The legs can be loosened with a slide on the bottom so the monopod can move freely. Move the slide back into place to lock it once you’ve positioned the monopod. You can also use the foot pedal on the base to move the monopod. Step on it again and it locks back into the vertical position automatically.
The quick-release is removed by pressing two buttons on the side. To return it, simply snap it back into place. The monopod can be released from its base with the same type of two-button mechanism as the quick-release and also snaps back into place.
The YC Onion Pineta Pro is made from carbon fiber, weighing in at 1.78kg/3.92 lbs. Its folded length and minimum height is 78cm/30.7in, and it can extend up to a maximum height of 162cm/63.8in. The recommended payload capacity for the Pineta Pro is 10kg/22lbs.
The Pineta Pro will be available in late June and will be priced at $349.
What do you think about the upgrade to the Pineta Pro? Is this something you can imagine adding to your kit? Let us know in the comments below.

A camera was put in my hands at 16, and I’ve been taking photographs ever since. Before moving to Vienna, I worked as a photographer on film sets, telling stories as they unfolded behind the scenes. Since then, I’ve focused on immersive theater, both as a photographer and an actor. I am the photographer for the award-winning Nesterval ensemble, documenting the energy and atmosphere of their performances. I’m a teller of stories. Stories hold my interest. I’ll take on any project with a story to tell.
