Godox KNOWLED AM1600R Mat Light Introduced – Two Sizes, Inflatable, Full Color

Godox has introduced a large, inflatable, full-color LED mat light that sets up in minutes and provides a wide, soft field of light. The Godox KNOWLED AM1600R comes in two sizes, 4×8 ft and 8×8 ft, and is designed for any large-scale film set, commercial shoot, or anywhere where traditional fixtures might be too bulky or slow to rig. Let’s have a look!

Godox has released a few new lights in the last couple of months. The KNOWLED M300R RGBWW LED was announced, and the company itself was also featured in our Focus Check podcast (ep71). Other recent releases include the KNOWLED MG6K High-Output Lighting and the KNOWLED MG2400R LED light with 2650W Power and full color mode. All three lights have launched just within the last two months!

KNOWLED AM1600R – specs

At its core, the AM1600R is a high-output RGBW LED panel that you mount on a durable, inflatable butterfly frame. The fixture runs on 100–240V AC via an external controller box, which supports firmware updates via USB-A, and includes a stand-mounting bracket.

Both the light and controller are IP54-rated for dust and splash resistance and are built with abrasion-resistant materials. The inflatable frame is airtight, but to be on the safe side, a repair kit is included to address any possible leaks.

The 4×8 ft (1.2 × 2.4 m) model concentrates its 1600W output into a smaller footprint for more intensity, while the 8×8 ft (2.4 × 2.4 m) version diffuses the same power across a larger surface area for a gentler spread. The inflatable frame pressurizes to just 8 psi, remains inflated for up to 15 days, and requires no truss or heavy rigging to suspend.

Modifying, mounting, and using it on set

The mat supports multiple lighting modes. The KNOWLED AM1600R’s wide CCT range is from 1800K to 10,000K, along with green/magenta tint adjustments from –100 to +100. It supports multiple color and effect modes, including RGBW, HSI, GEL, and preprogrammed FX. Dimming is adjustable in fine increments across four curves: linear, S-curve, exponential, and logarithmic, and smoothing options include default, smooth, and off.

Control options include onboard interface, DMX512/RDM, LumenRadio CRMX, and Ethernet-based Art-Net/sACN. For wireless setups, users can also operate the light via Bluetooth or NFC using the Godox Light or KNOWLED apps, with a range of up to 196 feet (60 meters).

Rigging, modifiers, and accessories

The AM1600R also has detachable accessories that include two stackable diffusion cloths with different softness levels, a pancake lantern, skirt, and grid. Touch fasteners and D-rings on the back of the light enable secure mounting or connecting multiple panels.

Who is it for?

Godox positions the KNOWLED AM1600R as a solution for large-scale productions that require broad, even illumination and typically rely on heavy rigging and support. According to the company, the panels are intended for cinematographers working in settings where setup time, mobility, and space constraints are a concern, for example, on film sets, outdoor shoots, commercial locations, or virtual stages. Whether it’s a practical alternative depends on how it performs in the field, but as we’ve seen with their other lights, Godox knows their stuff, and the design points to a focus on scale and flexibility without the usual bulk.

Size, weight, and what’s included

The 4×8 ft (1.2 × 2.4 m) AM1600R fixture weighs approximately 12 kg (26.5 lb), and the controller box adds another 11 kg (24.3 lb). The larger 8×8 ft (2.4 × 2.4 m) version is slightly heavier at around 31.5 kg (69.4 lb) for the fixture alone. Both configurations are shipped in a hard flight case along with the controller, air pump, and included accessories.
