Poll: What Is Your Preferred Camera Form Factor?

Poll: What Is Your Preferred Camera Form Factor?

Modern cameras are coming in all different shapes and sizes, and in today’s poll we wanted to check which shape might be the best for you to use. Yes, we are fully aware that a certain camera shape might be great for professional work and less comfortable for leisure use, yet if you could choose a shape for a single device, what would it be?

Current camera offerings from different manufacturers are settling on a few solid shapes. The “traditional” Sony FX9 and the like are one. The compact Canon EOS C50 (among others) is another. Then, the “cube shape, box-style” à la Kinefinity VISTA must be mentioned, and the shape of the traditional mirrorless camera should not be ignored. Last but not least, Osmo Pocket 3/4/4P might be the latest if you want to hold a camera vertically, although the style of holding itself is not new at all.

Each shape has an advantage. One is better for shoulder mounting, another is great for taking photos (and maybe videos too?). Another is best for rigging, and there are those that are perfect for moving freely.

No one shape that fits all

So while we might be comparing apples to oranges, the conclusion could be that no “one shape fits all,” yet if you were the one to design the “ultimate camera,” the one that would work best for you in most situations, what form factor would you go for? A “cube style”, Osmo Pocket shape, or something more traditional? And would the shape of your favorite camera hold well for taking videos and photos?

For me personally, holding a camera vertically (Osmo Pocket style) might get the maximum points. When working in such a way, it always feels so much more natural, especially for running & gunning.

I’ll be thankful if you take a minute to vote and, more importantly, leave a comment, as this topic of camera shape and design seems to be less attractive for manufacturers to deal with, although it should attract so much more design attention.
