This week’s episode dives into Apple’s newly announced Creator Studio – now offered as a subscription model. Johnnie and Nino also take a closer look at the rise and fall of Vimeo, discussing what changed over the years on this once filmmaker-focused platform. Plus, FUJIFILM has announced a… let’s say, very unique cinema camera.
The biggest news of the week is Apple’s official announcement of Apple Creator Studio, a subscription bundle launching on January 28, 2026. This new offering combines Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and the recently acquired Pixelmator Pro into a single package for $12.99/month or $129/year.
While perpetual licenses remain available, Apple is sweetening the pot with AI-powered features for Final Cut Pro. Nino and Johnnie discussed three standout additions:
Beat Detection: Utilizing Logic’s engine, this feature analyzes music tracks and generates a magnetic grid in the timeline, allowing edits to snap perfectly to the beat.Transcript Search: Users can now perform semantic searches within auto-generated transcripts, finding relevant clips based on topics even if they don’t remember the exact keywords.Visual Search: A new machine-learning tool that scans footage for objects (e.g., “stairs”), making tagging and organizing b-roll significantly faster.
The hosts also dove into the controversy surrounding Vimeo, sparked by Matt Johnson’s recent video essay, “The Rise and Fall of Vimeo”. Once the darling of the indie film community known for high-quality encoding and Staff Picks, the platform has pivoted aggressively toward enterprise solutions.Nino lamented the loss of the community aspect, noting that features like the public video feed are now inaccessible in regions like the EU and UK. The discussion touched on how Vimeo’s deletion policies for non-paying users and aggressive copyright strikes have alienated the very creators who built the platform’s reputation.
It wouldn’t be Focus Check without some unique gear news. Fujifilm has released the Instax Mini Evo Cinema, a hybrid instant camera that records 15-second video clips. While acknowledged as a gimmick, Johnny praised the ingenuity of the concept: users print a physical photo containing a QR code, which links directly to the video clip—a fun bridge between physical keepsakes and digital memories.
PixBoom Spark Documentary: CineD’s Gunther Machu released “Goa”, a stunning nature documentary shooting butterflies at high frame rates using the affordable PixBoom Spark global shutter camera.GoPro x Asus Laptop: A co-branded “Creator Laptop” was announced. While essentially a rebranded Asus ProArt PX13, it features a dedicated GoPro hotkey and pre-installed StoryCube software for managing action cam footage.ARRI’s Commitment: ARRI released a statement reaffirming their dedication to their lighting division, dispelling rumors of a spin-off and teasing a roadmap of new products for 2026.
