So far, I haven’t spent much thought on my monitors until I used and tested the new ASUS ProArt PA32UCDM display. Curious to hear what a difference a color-accurate monitor can make? Then read on …
A few years back, I was forced to replace my old living room TV with a new 55″ OLED display. I was stunned by the contrast, the deep blacks and bright highlights, as well as the superb colors. Back then, I was quickly researching whether OLED technology was also available as a desktop display. And I quickly realized that, yes, there were already a few brands available, but they were all costing around $3,500 to $5,000, … too much for me.
Hence, I abandoned this thought and continued with my 21:9 LED monitor, which I use for editing. I must say, though, that I was always a bit frustrated that my video footage looked different on my living room OLED screen than it did on my LED monitor. I calibrated the LED monitor frequently with a Color Munki colorimeter, but it still didn’t feel right.
That changed recently, when Johnnie asked me to review and test the new ASUS ProArt PA32UCDM monitor (32″) with an OLED panel:

I know I am stating the obvious, but here is a quick, non-scientific visual test: I visually graded the same reference scene first on my old monitor, see the image below:
Then, I switched to the new ASUS ProArt display. And my eyes fell out of my head. On the ASUS color-calibrated display, colors were way too saturated, there was a pinkish tint, and the white balance was off. Hence, I tried to adjust the scene visually to match the look I had on my old monitor, and here are the exported images from both tests.:
Well, the two images above appeared visually the same on my old monitor (left) and the new ASUS ProArt display (right). In reality, there was a very different result! Honestly, I was not aware that such significant differences still exist, even though I calibrate my old monitor frequently. Hence, my conclusion is very obvious: a color-accurate monitor is a must! Now, having used the new ASUS ProART display for quite a while now, every time I fire it up, I am once again amazed by the visual display qualities of this monitor – the colors, the blacks, the highlights – it is simply stunning.
In order to test the color qualities of the display, we purchased a Datacolor Spyder Pro (2024) colorimeter and software. It is important to note that even a color-calibrated monitor will drift over time, hence it needs recalibration periodically.
The important part here is βE and the color space coverage, as well as an accurate representation of the gamma curve. βE describes the deviation of a displayed (measured) color vs. the input color. An untrained eye starts to notice a difference for an βE > 3 (and yes, my old LED monitor had an βE of around 6 when I tested it).
Now, there are two ways to calibrate your monitor:
1) You can use a very handy feature that the ASUS ProArt display offers, the so-called ASUS ProArt Hardware Calibration Software. Using this, you plug in the colorimeter directly on the monitor via USB and run it through a calibration cycle with the ProArt software on your computer (you need to connect via Thunderbolt). This way, a calibrated color profile is stored on your monitor, and across multiple devices, you enjoy the same calibration (if you plug in a PlayStation for gaming, for example).
2) You run the colorimeter and software calibration via your computer/operating system. This way, you create an ICC color profile that is stored on your specific operating system, which is loaded when booting your computer.
Now, let’s start calibrating the monitor using approach number one with ASUS ProArt hardware calibration software and the Datacolor SpyderPro colorimeter.
We get the following report with the “native”, SDR preset (you can also use other presets for the calibration, like DCI-P3, etc):
Hence, all Delta E values are below one on the ASUS software. This should now be a universal calibration on the monitor. Now let’s test it with the Datacolor SpyderPro colorimeter and software (6.1) with my Windows system and then on macOS to see what values we get. Ideally, they would match across devices. But unfortunately not. See for yourself.
On Windows, the following is obtained:
As can be seen above, we could not verify the claim of providing 99% of DCI-P3. We only got 97% in our test. Next, let’s look at color accuracy. ASUS claims a βE < 1.
Here are the color accuracy (βE) results for the ProArt PA32UCDM on Windows:
This is a superb result. However, a bit above what ASUS claims. Now, let’s also consider the Gamma curve. I set it to 2.2 on the ASUS display:
And voilΓ‘, we measure exactly 2.2 – very good! A correct Gamma display is very important; otherwise, you are tempted to adjust blacks or brightness while grading your footage, when in reality, it looks different.
Now, let’s quickly shift over to macOS and have a look. We are getting the same color space (97% DCI-P3) and gamma results, but the βE values are worse:
This is strange, as I thought that the ASUS ProART calibration on the monitor should yield the same results across different systems. I did another test by calibrating each individual device using the above approach number two, with the Datacolor SpyderPro 2024 colorimeter and 6.1 software, but the βE results were worse, on macOS and Windows. Also, on a side note, I quickly checked the color space DCI-P3 on the display of the MacBook Air M1 that I used, and here I got what Apple claims, 99%. Switching over to the ASUS ProART PA32UCDM again, I only got 97%, not 99% as ASUS claims. Also, another test using the ASUS hardware calibration software on the monitor itself to calibrate specifically for DCI-P3 yielded the same result.
Overall, the ASUS ProART hardware calibration on the monitor itself yields the best results, and I can only highly recommend using that.
Apart from its display qualities, the ProArt monitor exhibits a very solid, high-quality build. It can be adjusted in height, tilt, inclination – all with a super solid feel.
The ASUS ProArt PA32UCDM OLED display is really a joy to use, and its visual display capabilities are just stunning! Consequently, it shows a strong performance in our tests -100% sRGB, 97% DCI-P3, and a color accuracy of max. βE ~ 1.2. Not exactly what ASUS claims, but really superb nevertheless. All that for a price of $1899, which, in my opinion, is a very good price/performance ratio. Well, for me, it’s now time to upgrade my monitor – I definitely can’t miss the experience of using this new ASUS OLED desktop display for my work going forward.
