AVID Media Composer 2020.10 Update - ProRes RAW Support

AVID just released an update for its famous non-linear editing software: Avid Media Composer 2020.10. This version now supports macOS v10.15.7, and it includes linking and playback of ProRes RAW media using the Universal Media Engine plug-in.

AVID is moving fast and is continuously releasing software updates for its famous Media Composer editing software. Earlier this year, they already released version 2020.4 that we discussed here, which included support for the latest Apple Mac Pro and ProRes support for Windows users.

Avid Media Composer 2020.10 Update Features

AVID just released its latest Avid Media Composer 2020.10 update that includes only few (yet major) changes, including:

  • Support for latest macOS version: macOS 10.15.7.
  • Media Composer 2020.10 now supports linking and playback of ProRes RAW media using the Universal Media Engine plug-in. However, you can’t export in ProRes RAW at the moment.

And that’s it for the major changes. Of course, this update also fixes a lot of minor bugs, you can read the full list here.

It can seem like a minor update, but it’s a big deal for Avid Media Composer user that can now work with ProRes RAW footage inside their favorite NLE.

For macOS v10.14 and earlier, make sure the “Pro Video Formats” package is installed (if not already present). You can download it here for free. For Windows 10 64-bit systems, you’ll have to install the Apple SDK on your computer, which is available to download here.

Apple ProRes RAW is now supported by many editing applications, including Adobe Premiere Pro, FCPX, ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront, FilmLight Baselight, Grass Valley Edius. It’s still not supported by DaVinci Resolve, but the upcoming DaVinci Resolve 17 version announcement in a couple of days might change things.

Pricing and Availability

The Avid Media Composer 2020.10 update is free for all existing users. If you’re not an Avid Media Composer user, the software is $23.99/month or $239.00/year. For more information, you can visit the AVID website here.

I guess this leaves Resolve as the only player that doesn’t support ProRes Raw.

Too bad.
