Formatt Firecrest 2mm Ultra Cine Superslim 4x5.65 IRND Filters Announced

Formatt Firecrest 2mm Ultra Cine Superslim IRND filters are available in 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, 1.8, and 2.1 strengths and only in 4×5.65 size. They offer a lightweight design and half the thickness of regular filters. Formatt also offers a 2mm filter tray and a 100mm MKII holder.

Formatt-Hitech is a filter manufacturer with headquarters in the UK. The company now announced new 4×5.65 IRND filters that are twice as slim as regular filters and are made in the UK. Let’s take a short look at them.

The new slim filters from Formatt come only in 4×5.65 size and – as the name already implies, with a thickness of only 2mm. That is half the thickness and around half the weight of what standard 4mm filters offer. As Formatt claims, these filters will be suitable for lightweight setups such as gimbals, drones, or steady cams. The full set of filters with the holder weighs 360g. The Firecrest Ultra Superslim 4×5.65 filters are made of premium grade optical glass and they will be available in 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, 1.8, and 2.1 strengths.

The filters go well with ultra-lightweight matte boxes like the Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom. Formatt also announced a dedicated 2mm filter tray for ARRI standard matte boxes that will allow the filters to be used in most Bright Tangerine, Chroziel, Wooden Camera, and ARRI matte boxes.

Alternatively, two 2mm filters can be stacked together and placed in a regular 4mm tray. The Bright Tangerine Atom matte box even allows a 2mm Superslim and a regular 4mm filter to be combined together in its holder – that will enable to use of both diffusion and Superslim IRND filter simultaneously for instance.

For users requiring a filter attachment system with the lowest possible form factor, the new filters are also compatible with the new lightweight Firecrest 100mm MKII holder that accepts the 2mm Superslim 4×5.65 as well as standard 100mm x 100mm photographic glass or resin filters. It secures them to the lens thread via adapter rings in sizes from 67mm to 86mm. In addition, the holder can take the included 86mm circular polariser at the same time. This polariser can be used in combination with the other filters or on its own.
