FUJIFILM XF 18mm F/1.4 R LM WR Lens Announced

FUJIFILM has just released a new wide-angle ultra-fast prime lens for APS-C-format FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras: the FUJIFILM XF 18mm F/1.4 R LM WR. This compact and lightweight lens might just be perfect for everyday use. Let’s take a closer look at it!

The FUJIFILM XF 18mm F/2 R lens originally came out in 2012 with the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 system. While this lens is perfectly okay – being very compact and quite affordable, it doesn’t have incredible optical performances.

Fast forward to today and FUJIFILM released a much more advanced and optically refined 18mm alternative (28mm Full-Frame equivalent): the FUJIFILM XF 18mm F/1.4 R LM WR.

FUJIFILM XF 18mm F/1.4 R LM WR Features

The FUJIFILM XF 18mm F/1.4 R LM WR is an X-mount lens, that is compatible with every APS-C mirrorless camera from FUJIFILM, including their latest FUJIFILM X-S10 that we reviewed here.

The lens is pretty compact with dimensions of only 2.7 x 3″/68.8 x 75.6mm for a weight of 13.1oz/370g. The XF 18mm F/1.4 R LM WR has a maximum aperture of F/1.4 and a close focus distance of only 11cm/4.3″ making it perfect for everyday use, from street photography to landscape/documentary/travel photography.

The lens design consists of 15 elements in 9 groups. To reduce chromatic aberration and distortions, the lens has both aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements. Finally, the glass elements feature a Super EBC coating to control flare and ghosting when shooting in bright and backlit conditions.

The aperture diaphragm consists of 9 rounded blades, it has a manual aperture ring – that you can also set in Auto position – and the filter diameter is 62mm. Autofocus performances should be pretty solid with a “near-silent” linear motor.

As its name suggests, the XF 18mm F/1.4 R LM WR is weather resistant with weather sealing to protect the lens against dust and moisture. Also, it can be used under icy conditions as low as 14°F/-10°C, according to FUJIFILM.

Price and Availability

The XF 18mm F/1.4 R LM WR will be available in late May for a price of $999, which is $400 more expensive than the F/2.0 version.
