GoPro has just announced an entirely new lineup of cameras: the MISSION 1 series. All three new cameras will feature a 50MP 1-inch sensor, the new GP3 image processor, high-resolution video modes up to 8K at 60P, a 4K 120P Open Gate recording mode, and much more. A first for GoPro: an interchangeable-lens version will now also be part of the equation. So, let’s take a closer look at what might be GoPro’s biggest announcement in years.
The GoPro GP3 image processor was announced in March 2026, and we could definitely anticipate that something was coming. However, we recently reported that ahead of NAB 2026, which will mark GoPro’s return to the show after a very long absence, the company had cut 23% of its workforce. Indeed, the action camera market has been highly competitive over the last couple of years, and GoPro’s revenue has declined significantly as DJI and Insta360 have gained market share. So, will the three new MISSION 1 cameras and the accompanying ecosystem of accessories be the hit the company expects, boosting sales and helping it regain its leading position?
With the MISSION 1 series, GoPro appears to be moving into new territory. The focus is no longer limited to rugged action cameras with powerful stabilization algorithms and a well-known ecosystem of mounting accessories. Instead, the company is clearly targeting a broader market.
Indeed, this new lineup introduces the MISSION 1 PRO ILS, which features a Micro Four Thirds mount. This clear indication will give users a lot of lens flexibility, which is something entirely new for GoPro, and places the system closer to compact cinema or mirrorless cameras. However, whether this shift will resonate with users remains to be seen.
The lineup consists of three models, all built around the same core GP3 image processor and 50MP 1″ image sensor:
All in all, on paper, you got it: the image quality should be consistent and similar across the range.
The MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO are now waterproof up to 20m/66ft without any extra housing, while the MISSION 1 PRO ILS is weatherproof. We don’t have information on the weight and size of each camera yet, but all cameras have been upgraded with a larger 2.59″ OLED rear screen, a 1.4″ front LCD screen, and raised buttons to make them easier to navigate with gloves. The MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO feature an updated built-in lens design with a wide 159° native field of view, come with a hydrophobic lens cover, and a removable lens hood.
All MISSION 1 cameras feature a 50MP 1-inch sensor. This bigger sensor should definitely help in low-light shooting situations, which is usually action cameras’ biggest weakness. According to GoPro, this sensor should give you up to 14 stops of dynamic range and “professional-grade image quality when paired with GoPro’s new GP3 processor and its image processing capabilities.”
All cameras come equipped with GoPro’s GP3 processor. We wrote extensively about it, but in a nutshell, this image processor features 5nm etching, which should provide better heat management, longer battery life, and support for all those high resolutions/frame rates. Furthermore, an AI Neural Processor Unit (NPU) enables “next-generation video pixel processing and stunning low-light image performance.”
The inclusion of Open Gate recording up to 8K60/4K120 on the MISSION 1 PRO is a first on a GoPro camera and allows the full sensor area to be utilized. This can be useful for reframing and adapting content for different aspect ratios, as well as allowing anamorphic shooting via lens adapters or M4/3 anamorphic lenses.
At the moment, we know you can crank the bitrate up to 240 Mbps and capture HLG-HDR and 10-bit color footage in the GP-Log2 picture profile. The cameras will feature Timecode Sync, which can be very handy for multi-camera shoots.
On the audio side, the cameras now feature four built-in microphones and 32-bit float audio recording. According to GoPro, “Bluetooth® 5.3 audio lets you wirelessly connect to compatible devices utilizing the Hands-Free Profile (HFP) v1.9 with Super Wideband (SWB) Speech, for high-fidelity wireless audio.”
Accessories have always played a critical role in the GoPro ecosystem, and with the MISSION 1 series, that story is evolving. While the classic mounting system we all know remains existent and compatible with all the mounts you might already have, GoPro introduced a revamped lineup of accessories that match the cameras’ cinematic ambitions. So here are all the new MISSION 1 accessories:
The MISSION 1 series represents a bold move for GoPro. The company is clearly expanding beyond its traditional market. At the same time, specifications alone do not tell the full story. Image quality, rolling shutter, color science, and usability will ultimately define how these cameras perform in real-world scenarios.
The interchangeable lens version is particularly interesting. However, it also places the system in direct competition with well-established players. It will be interesting to see how the MISSION 1 series performs once it becomes available and whether GoPro can successfully establish itself in this new segment.
MISSION 1 PRO, MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, and MISSION 1 will be available for preorder beginning May 21st and are expected to ship May 28th. MISSION 1 PRO ILS, MISSION 1 PRO Creator Edition, and MISSION 1 PRO Ultimate Creator Edition will be available beginning Q3 2026.
GoPro says these accessories will start rolling out from May 2026 through Q3, with availability updates as they hit shelves.
