Hollyland Vcore Launched – Turn Your Phone into a Camera Monitor

Hollyland has just launched Vcore, a lightweight camera accessory that allows you to transform your iOS or Android smartphone into a professional on-camera monitor. This device connects to your camera via HDMI and to your smartphone via USB-C or Lightning, and it also doubles as a wireless video transmission system, supporting up to four smartphones/tablets, or up to two Hollyland Pyro-series receivers. So, let’s take a closer look at it!

Using your smartphone as an on-camera monitor is not a new concept, as companies such as Accsoon have been offering this feature since 2022 with their SeeMo HDMI, followed by the SeeMo Pro, which features an SDI input, and the latest SeeMo 4K.

After the audio, wireless video, livestreaming camera, and intercom system, Hollyland continues to expand their lineup of products with the Vcore, a compact device that allows you to use your Android/iOS smartphone as a monitor, but also doubles up as a wireless video transmission system and compact recorder.

Hollyland Vcore – features

The Vcore is a compact unit that measures 110 x 70 x 27.2mm/4.33 × 2.76 × 1.07″ for a weight of 220g/ 0.48 lbs. The unit features a built-in battery with a maximum runtime of 6 hours, making it perfect for sitting on top of your camera via its built-in cold shoe mount.

The unit comes with a smartphone mount to attach your iOS/Android smartphone to the Vcore, as well as a magnetic mount. There is a 1/4″-20 threaded hole with locating points at the bottom of the unit.

On the left side of the Vcore, you’ll find one full-size HDMI input port, an SD card slot, and a USB-C output port. On the right side is an LCD status screen, a menu and power buttons, and a 5-13V USB-C power input port for charging the unit or extending its maximum runtime.

So how does it work? First, connect your camera to the Vcore via HDMI, and then connect it to your smartphone using a USB-C or Lightning cable. Next, you have to download the free HollyView App. And voila, you’re set to monitor your camera’s signal up to 4K30p.

Wireless video and recording features

Where the Vcore shines is that it doubles up as a wireless video transmitter. Indeed, the system can transmit your video signal to up to four smartphones over the 5GHz frequency with a range of up to 100m/328ft and a latency of 65ms. Furthermore, if you already have Hollyland Pyro-series receivers, you can connect the Vcore to two smartphones and one receiver, or two receivers. Lastly, you can wirelessly trigger your camera inside the HollyView app.

The Vcore can also be used to record footage onto the internal SD card up to 1080P60 using the H.264 codec. These proxy files do have embedded timecode, which makes linking to the original camera footage a breeze in post-production. Furthermore, if you use one of the latest iPhone models, you can even capture footage in ProRes 422 Proxy, 422 LT, 422, or 422 HQ up to 4K30P or 1080P60. Additionally, your smartphone recording can be triggered automatically by your camera, a practical feature.

For photographers, you can connect Vcore to your camera’s USB-C port to capture uncompressed RAW/JPEG images. Then, these images are wirelessly transmitted to mobile devices through the HollyView app and to macOS via the Capture One plugin.

Lastly, the Hollyland Vcore also has live streaming and real-time chroma keying capabilities via the HollyView app.
