The LEE 85 Filter System for Small Body Mirrorless Cameras

LEE Filters recently announced the new LEE 85 filter system for smaller body and crop sensor mirrorless cameras.

The LEE 85 filter system has been designed as a lightweight professional filter system suited to smaller sensor APS-C sensor cameras. Available in a number of kits, the LEE 85 filter system should be available in Q2 2020. It’s been designed with cameras such as the Fuji X series in mind.

Lightweight LEE 85 Filter Holder

The system features a lightweight filter holder with three size filter rings allowing it to mount onto lenses with 58mm, 67mm and 72mm filter threads. The kits include a set of specially designed filters made for smaller cameras and the smaller holder.

The filter holder has slots for three filters and features a locking mechanism to fix the filters in place.

LEE 85 Filters

The filters themselves are rectangular with a grip tab for easy handling. The grad filters feature a smaller transition area perfectly designed for the smaller sensor cameras. You can see in the below illustration a comparison between the larger LEE 100 hard grad on the left side, and the LEE 100 very hard grad with a smaller transition area, which is the same as the LEE 85 hard grad. The smaller transition area of the LEE 85 hard grad covers a similar portion of the image on a crop sensor camera as the LEE 1oo hard grad filter on a full frame camera.

The LEE 85 polariser clicks into the holder and can then be rotated for the required polarisation angle.

I’ve been using Lee Seven5 filters since 2013, on my Sony mirrorless cameras. Optical quality is good and the kit is nice and small. I would expect the 85 series to be good as well. But there’s one Achille’s heel to the Seven5 series (for video users, anyway) that I see being a problem with the 85 series as well. There’s no good hood or “baby” matte box offered. The rubber hood they offer lets in light from the sides and from behind, and that causes problems. I inquired with them if they would make a matte box for the system and they said they had no interest in doing so. Maybe they’ll come up with something for the 85 system.

Glad you inquired. Saddened by their response for a matte box. Would also have loved a filter thread for 77mm and 82mm
