MSI Creator 15 Laptop Announced - Intel i7 8-Core, RTX 2080, Touchscreen Option

MSI announced the availability of its new Creator 15 laptop. It features the 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10875H series processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU options. Users can choose either a Full HD touchscreen display (first touchscreen in the Creator series) or 4K panel. The laptop is now available for pre-order starting at $1,599.

While large desktop computers usually provide better editing experience (better ergonomics and more computing power with better cooling), laptops are essential for working on the go. If you are a macOS user, the choice is probably not that difficult – MacBook Pro 16″ configured to match the budget.

For us, Windows users, there are many options out there. In May 2020, for example, Dell introduced its new flagship laptops for creators – XPS 15 and 17 models. MSI is now launching the Creator 15 laptop. Let’s take a look at its features and specs.

MSI Creator 15

MSI is aiming this laptop towards creators (filmmakers, photographers, graphic designers, etc…) – hence the name. Its specs, of course, also reflect that. MSI chose the latest 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10875H series processor (8-core, up to 5.1 GHz) to power the laptop.

GPU is provided by NVIDIA. Depending on the configuration, the laptop starts with the GeForce GTX 1660Ti and goes all the way up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Max-Q. RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 models are, of course, also available.

The laptop’s motherboard includes the HM470 chipset with two DDR4-3200 memory slots. It seems that MSI will sell configurations with either 16GB or 32GB memory, but it will be possible to equip a maximum of 64GB. For storage, MSI Creator 15 offers two M.2 SSD slots.

The MSI Creator 15 screen includes Delta-E < 2 color accuracy and MSI’s True Color Technology for accurate color display. MSI says the screens are verified by Calman to ensure the best display performance. When it comes to a screen choice, MSI is offering three options with the new Creator 15:

  • 15.6” 4K UHD (3840×2160), 100% Adobe RGB color gamut, Thin Bezel Display
  • 15.6” Full HD (1920×1080) Touchscreen, close to 100% sRGB, IPS-Level Thin Bezel Display
  • 15.6” Full HD (1920×1080), close to 100% sRGB, IPS-Level Thin Bezel Display

What I find interesting about the Creator 15, is the fairly large 99.9 Wh battery. MSI says it should provide up to 9-hour battery life. What also sounds good is the included Thunderbolt 3 port allowing users to charge the laptop with a power bank.

Further connectors include one USB Type-A and one USB Type-C (both USB3.2 Gen2), one HDMI (4K@60Hz) port, RJ45 LAN port, and MIC-in/headphone-out combo jack. There is also an HD webcam with facial recognition positioned above the screen. Furthermore, there is a fingerprint login, glass touchpad, dual speakers, and a full-size SD card reader.

Cooling is usually an issue with laptops. Dell, for example, chose to combat the heat with the vapor chamber in the XPS 17. MSI claims, that Creator 15 features MSI’s exclusive Cooler Boost Technology with 0.1mm fan blades to maximize airflow and keep the system cool for better CPU performance. I am curious how this will prove itself in tests.

The laptop features a solid aluminum chassis and a sandblasted, carbon gray finish. The laptop’s dimensions are 358.3×248×18.3-19.8mm (14.11″x9.76″x0.72″) and its weight is 2.1 kg (4.63 lbs). For easier collaborative work, Creator 15 also features a 180° lay-flat hinge design and a flip-n-share function.

Price and Availability

MSI Creator 15 laptops are now available for pre-order. As I mentioned above, the price starts at $1,599 for the basic configuration.
