Panasonic LUMIX GH6 Firmware Version 2.3 Announced - BRAW External Recording and 4K 120p

Panasonic has just announced an upcoming firmware update for the Panasonic LUMIX GH6 version 2.3 with the addition of external 12-bit RAW video recording capabilities to Blackmagic Design video recorders, as well as support for 4K 120p/100p HDMI output. This firmware should be available July 10th, free of charge.

The Panasonic LUMIX GH6 was released in February 2022 as the successor to the famous GH5. This competent Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera can record 5.7K60P footage internally in Apple ProRes 422, and in FHD 1920 x 1080 resolution at up to 300fps. You can watch our in-depth review and mini-documentary on the Panasonic LUMIX GH6 if you missed it.

A couple of months after its launch, Panasonic released firmware update version 2.0 that unleashed external ProRes RAW capabilities to Atomos Ninja V/V+ external monitor recorders, as well as expanded internal ProRes 422/422 HQ internal recording capabilities. More recently, in September 2022, the firmware update version 2.2 added direct SSD recording over USB.

After ten months without an update, Panasonic is back with a firmware update version 2.3 for the LUMIX GH6 that adds BRAW external recording capabilities and support for 4K 120p/100p via the HDMI output.

Panasonic LUMIX GH6 firmware version 2.3 – what’s new?

The new firmware update version 2.3 for the Panasonic LUMIX GH6 makes it an even more versatile compact mirrorless camera. First, the new firmware adds external 12-bit RAW video recording to Blackmagic Design Video Assist 12G HDR monitor/recorders. However, not all recording resolutions are available. Indeed, you’ll only be able to capture BRAW footage in 5.7K, C4K, Anamorphic (4:3) 5.8K, and Anamorphic (4:3) 4.4K.

Panasonic recommends that when your camera’s recording quality is set to 5.7K at 60/50P or C4K at 120P/100P, you should set the codec quality of your BMD Video Assist 12G HDR to a constant bitrate of 5:1 or lower when recording to an SSD. If you’re recording to an SD card, you should set your constant bitrate to 8:1 or lower.

Lastly, the firmware update version 2.3 for the Panasonic LUMIX GH6 adds support for C4K and 4K 120P/100P over HDMI.
