Quasar Science Ossium Shells and Frames Introduced – Scalable Systems for LED Tube Lights

Quasar Science has just unveiled two new lighting accessories, the Ossium Shells and Frames, that are designed to arrange multiple LED tubes into large lighting arrays. They are compatible with the company’s Crossfade X, Rainbow 2, and Double Rainbow fixtures and seem particularly useful for virtual production applications.

Back at BSC Expo this year, we were quite amazed to see lighting product manufacturer Quasar Science showcasing an image-based lighting solution for virtual production built around their Rainbow 2 and Double Rainbow LED tube lights.

The company, which is part of Videndum Production Solutions (previously known as The Vitec Group), has just introduced new lighting accessories, the Ossium Shells and Frames, that can help scaling up their existing LED tubes into larger lighting arrays. Let’s take a closer look!

Quasar Science Ossium Shells and Frames: features

Quasar Science’s new Ossium Shells and Frames were developed to bank multiple LED tube fixtures together so they can act as a single large, soft light source.

Particularly, the new Ossium Shells are specifically designed for the Crossfade X bi-color (2,000-6,000K) models as well as the Rainbow 2 and Double Rainbow RGBX tubes, which we reviewed in this article. The accessory allows to bank from 2 up to 4 fixtures in a single array, and is available for both the 2ft/60cm and the 4ft/1.2m variants of the tubes.

The shell comes with built-in doors that allow users to better shape light and control spill, and can be rigged onto traditional lighting grip via an included Baby Pin interface. A multibank AC adapter supplies power to the tubes, which quickly and securely attach to the accessory via a backplate.

On the other hand, the new Ossium Frames are compatible exclusively with the Rainbow 2 and Double Rainbow models. However, they can accomodate a larger number of tubes (12 Rainbow 2 units or 6 Double Rainbow units), thus massively multiplying the creative possibilities offered by the individually-controllable pixels of these linear LED lights.

Indeed, users maintain granular wired and wireless control (DMX, Bluetooth, sACN) of all the LED pixels in the array. This can be particularly helpful for virtual production applications where a high level of precision is required to match the lighting conditions of pre-existing images.
