Samyang has just released its first autofocus ultra-wide-angle lens for FUJIFILM X-mount cameras: the Samyang AF 12mm F/2 X. This lightweight and very compact lens covers APS-C sensors and should give you a field of view of around 99.1° with a minimum focusing distance of only 20cm. So let’s take a closer look at it!
Back in May 2020, FUJIFILM officially opened its X-mount to third-party lens manufacturers.
Samyang, which has been very prolific lately with the recent release of the Samyang AF 24-70mm F/2.8 zoom lens for Sony cameras, has just released its first autofocus lens for FUJIFILM X-mount cameras: the AF 12mm F/2 X.
The Samyang AF 12mm F/2 X is an ultra-wide-angle lens for FUJIFILM X-mount cameras with an APS-C sensor. It is currently compatible with most FUJIFILM cameras, including the X-H1, X-S10, X-pro 1, X-pro 2, X-pro 3, X-E1, X-E2 X-E2s, X-E3, X-E4, X-T1, X-T2, X-T3, X-T4, X-T10, X-T20, X-T30.
With a very compact size of only 59.2mm/2.3in and a weight of 212g/7.5oz, it won’t take that much space inside your camera bag when you’re going on a trip. Indeed, the AF 12mm F/2 X has a field of view of 99.1°, making it perfect for landscape shots.
On the lens, you’ll find a micro-patterned rubber focus ring. Also, there are several joints and one rear protective glass to properly weather seal the lens body and make it snow/dust/light-rain proof. Finally, on the inside, there is a linear STM focus motor for fast and precise autofocus performances.
The lens design of the AF 12mm F/2 X consists of 12 elements in 10 groups. Also, there are five particular elements to help reduce chromatic aberrations: one H-ASP, one ASP, and three ED elements.
The aperture diaphragm comprises seven rounded aperture blades that create a smooth and natural-looking bokeh with a starburst effect. The minimum focus distance is only 20cm/0.65ft, and the front filter thread is 62mm.
The Samyang AF 12mm F/2 X is available now for $399/€398. As a direct comparison, the Samyang 12mm F/2.0 NCS CS, which is a manual lens, is $249. The only competition I could think of in the autofocus league is the ZEISS Touit 12mm F/2.8 that retails for $999. So this new Samyang lens with autofocus capabilities is a bargain!
