Foolography, a German startup specializing in smart camera accessories, has just launched Unleashed ’22 on Kickstarter. This upgraded version follows their Unleashed ’18 dongle and allows photographers and filmmakers to create timelapses easily, control video recording settings and trigger the camera, do long-exposure shots, and geotag your pictures. So let’s take a closer look at what this little Bluetooth module can do for you!
Various options are available on the market to control your DSLR/mirrorless camera wired or wirelessly. The two most common ones are “traditional” remotes, and the other is the camera manufacturer’s smartphone app. However, let’s be honest, carrying a large remote in your camera bag is cumbersome, and the app that comes with your camera usually has very limited capabilities and is not that well designed.
To solve both issues – and even more – a German startup called foolography recently launched a tiny dongle that promises to make your life easier: Unleashed ’22.
Unleashed ’22 is a Bluetooth dongle that connects to your DSLR/mirrorless camera’s USB or HDMI port. At launch, this system will be compatible with no less than 144 camera models; below is a quick list.
Once this tiny and lightweight dongle – 14 x 16 x 5.5mm for 5 grams only – is connected to your camera, the camera will power it, and it’ll turn on. So you got it, no need to charge it or bring extra batteries.
Then, on your Android or iOS smartphone, you’ll have to download the Unleashed App to access all the features of this device. Connect the dongle to your smartphone via Bluetooth, and you’re ready to start creating.
On the splash screen, you’ll have five choices: photo, video, timelapse, autoramp, and gallery.
In Photo mode, you can adjust all your camera settings – including shutter, aperture, ISO, WB, image quality, and so on – as well as trigger your camera remotely.
The Video mode is pretty similar to the Photo one, except that it’s made for filmmakers. You can adjust your camera settings, start and stop your recording, check your camera status, etc. If you have multiple DSLR/mirrorless cameras and Unleashed ’22 dongles, the main difference is that you can trigger all your cameras simultaneously with one click of a button.
Timelapse and Autoramp settings are made for creating, as their name suggests, timelapses. You can set your interval, project frame rate, clip length, and the App will tell you how much time you need to stay on site.
However, once you start a Timelapse, your smartphone doesn’t need to be connected to the Unleashed ’22 all the time. Even if your phone’s battery dies, the dongle will keep your camera going according to the settings you entered.
Also, Unleashed ’22 is compatible with motion control systems if you want to make timelapses with a bit of motion.
Last but not least, Gallery mode allows you to view all your photos. Also, you can see where you took these photos thanks to a precise built-in GPS geotagging system.
Considering the size, weight, and the fact that it does not require any battery, I think Unleashed ’22 could be an excellent addition to every camera if you plan on shooting timelapses or often shoot with multiple cameras.
Unleashed ’22 is available now on Kickstarter for €149 as an early backer (EU retail price: €249). The campaign is already fully-funded and will be live until November 30th.

We are saying this at the end of every crowdfunding-related article: please be aware of the risks when backing a project on a crowdfunding platform. Please read the crowdfunding platform’s terms and conditions carefully and remember that there can be significant delays when delivering the product. Although we try to only write about trustworthy campaigns, some crowdfunding projects even don’t get delivered at all. This campaign is not foolography GmGmbH’sirst successful one, but there are always risks.
What do you think about this little add-on accessory? Do you often shoot timelapses or use your smartphone to control your camera? Don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments down below!
