ClouZen OFFLOADER 16X Review - Copying Footage With Peace of Mind and Extreme Flexibility

The integrity of the footage is the single most critical link in the chain. Once the sensor has done its work and the cards are pulled, the responsibility passes from the cinematographer to the data pipeline. On the fast-paced set of a professional film, the bottleneck is rarely the camera; it’s the time and risk involved in offloading, verifying, and duplicating the footage to be used in post-production. The ClouZen OFFLOADER 16X (Standard configuration) is designed to plug this hole in the chain. Let’s take a closer look.

While the standard consumer drive or laptop setup is perfectly functional, the OFFLOADER 16X is a dedicated piece of hardware designed to manage media at high volume. It takes the same level of care with the transfer process as the camera did with the capture, providing a centralized location for ingesting multiple cards and redundant cloning without the need to run the media through an additional computer.

ClouZen OFFLOADER 16X SD and standard configurations

The ClouZen OFFLOADER 16X is available in two configurations. The OFFLOADER 16X SD is focused more on a workflow with SD cards, has 16 SD card slots, 8 of which are Micro SD compatible. We, on the other hand, are testing the other version, the OFFLOADER 16X Standard, which is more focused on a versatile workflow and supports almost any card or adapter modern digital cameras use today. Both versions are priced the same, so you must decide for yourself which fits your workflow best.

What’s in the box:

  • OFFLOADER 16X Standard/SD
  • Magnetic lid for the card slots
  • Power cable
  • Traveling case

While I do like the carrying case, it is almost too small, as the magnetic lid doesn’t fit when the OFFLOADER 16X is in its case.

Available card slot and bus on the Standard version:

  • 8x SD card slots: 4 of them are compatible with Micro SD
  • 4x CFexpress Type A: All 4 of them are also compatible with CFexpress Type B
  • 4x USB (Type C) readers

It is important to note that slots compatible with either SD or Micro SD/CFexpress Type A or Type B can’t be used simultaneously. Also, the 4 Type C ports are read-only, so you can’t repurpose them for something else.

For offloading to an external drive, you can connect two USB Type-C drives (HDD/SSD) on the front of the OFFLOADER 16X and one USB Type-A on the back. The two on the front are USB 3.2 Gen 1, with a speed of up to 370 MB/s. The Type-A port on the back is USB 3.2 Gen 1, with a slightly faster speed of 410 MB/s. All USB-C ports are slightly embedded into the case, so you can’t accidentally break/snap a cable or break a port.

These are all the connections on the back:

  • USB Type-A port
  • Report Port: When a USB drive is connected, generates MD5 checksums and saves LOG/PDF reports
  • AC Power Input: 12V 4A
  • D-Tap: 12V-24V
  • V-Mount battery plate

The V-Mount plate comes with an extra D-Tap, but it is for other peripherals, not for charging the OFFLOADER 16X.

Why not just copy and paste?

For most people, moving files from a camera card to a computer is simple: plug it in, drag the folder over, and wait for the green bar to finish. But for anyone who has ever opened a file only to see it glitch, files/footage corrupted, or found a folder of photos that won’t open, you know that the “green bar” was probably lying to you.

When you copy a file on your computer, the computer basically just “notes” that a file was moved. It doesn’t check if every single piece of data made it across successfully. If your cable is slightly loose or your computer gets a “hiccup,” you can end up with a corrupt file. The OFFLOADER 16X performs a “Verified Clone”. It double-checks the copy against the original, and if the copy isn’t a 100% identical twin, it tells you immediately. That’s the difference between assuming your files are safe and confidently knowing they are.

Reasons to use a dedicated offloader

Now that we have figured out why it’s not always safe to just copy and paste, you may be asking: Is there software out there that I can use to verify that? Yes, of course, there is. But having a dedicated device like the OFFLOADER 16X Standard keeps the heavy lifting off your DIT PC and pretty much automates the process. This can be a game-changer when working with more than one camera on set. For example, I’ve had many indie film shoots, music videos, and even commercials where a dedicated data wrangler isn’t in the budget, so someone must do it either while shooting or after, and we all know by now this can lead to problems. Either the files are corrupted, some files weren’t saved properly, or, even worse, someone formatted the wrong card!

Here, something like the ClouZen OFFLOADER 16X Standard comes in handy. Just plug in a card or cards, and with one push of a button, you can back up your data to the most secure standard available right now.

Features

Multi offloading

The OFFLOADER 16X Standard can copy 16 card slots at the same time while having a constant speed of 30GB/min on just one external SSD. It keeps that speed even when using two or three SSDs at the same time. This is because the company uses its own patented hardware architecture called β€œX-Copy”. This technology allows for parallel data streams. It ensures that adding a second or third backup destination does not slow down the transfer speed from the source card.

Automated folder structuring and sorting

It automatically organizes footage based on project folders. It labels sub-folders by shoot date, first video file, and camera model/volume label, which is essential for DITs managing multi-cam shoots.

Reports & diagnostics

  • MD5 Checksum: Please check below for more information about MD5
  • Automated Backup Reports: Soon, the ClouZen OFFLOADER 16X, both SD and Standard, will support backup reports that will automatically be made into a PDF. Those backup reports will include four thumbnails per clip, timecode, duration, and file name. ClouZen themselves say around early 2026.
  • Batch Media Health Check: It can scan up to 16 cards at once for “Bad Sectors” or “Slow Sectors” before you start filming, allowing you to retire failing cards before they lose footage.
  • Batch formatting: The OFFLOADER 16X is capable of formatting all 16 card slots at the same time.

MD5 (Message Digest Algorithm 5)

When I was talking about the most secure standard when it comes to saving files in this kind of environment, I’m referring to MD5. To fully explain MD5 would definitely take too long, so I will give you a short explanation to keep it simple, so we don’t have to dive too much into the meta.

When you start to copy, MD5 generates a unique 32-character string, which is generally called an β€œMD5 hash.” The OFFLOADER 16X does the hash generation simultaneously while copying the files. When finished, it will run the same calculation it did before copying the footage, so it can check if both MD5 hashes are the same. With this, we have 100% proof that nothing got corrupted.

MD5 will make the copying process about 20% slower, but it’s worth the safety for expensive shoots. Also worth noting is that you are able to turn MD5 off in the project menu.

Working with the ClouZen OFFLOADER 16X Standard

I loved working with the OFFLOADER 16X Standard. The menu is on an ARRI-level simplicity and is easy to use. Nothing is hidden under layers of menus or just called differently because of brand identity. ClouZen knows exactly who its customers are and what they need. Even when it comes to firmware updating, they kept it simple: you have 16 slots? Just use one of them, and it will find the firmware file easily, no extra USB slot or anything like that.

When it comes to copying, everything worked as intended, and it copied everything safely and without any struggles. The only thing I can complain about is how loud it can be; even on standby, it can be quite noisy. When I measured the dB, it was between 50 and 52 dB.

When it comes to power delivery, ClouZen really did a great job. You have AC and D-Tap that will power it easily, or when you need to be mobile, you can power it via V-Mount. The V-Mount is a great feature to have because the OFFLOADER 16X is capable of switching instantly between the AC power and the V-Mount battery, protecting it against power outages.

Sadly, one feature I’m missing, which I would’ve liked to see, is the cloud implementation of its smaller brother, the ClouZen TAINER. The TAINER is able to upload to cloud solutions like Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Dropbox for faster distribution.

Conclusion

Did I enjoy working with the ClouZen OFFLOADER 16X Standard? Yes! It is the perfect upgrade for every DIT station. Its versatility makes it a no-brainer for anyone who must offload a lot of data at once. The easy diagnostics feature is amazing for every production company or rental house, too. ClouZen doesn’t give itself enough credit for the diagnostics tool, as it truly is fast and reliable. The OFFLOADER 16X makes handling memory cards an easy thing you can do on the side without babysitting a green bar on your screen. That being said, I do miss features like cloud implementation and a quieter fan.

Pricing and availability

The only thing that may scare people about buying it is the price. The OFFLOADER 16X Standard and the SD are not exactly cheap. $3,949 is a big investment that I assume many will think twice about. If so, I would strongly recommend trying the much cheaper, smaller brother, the TAINER, for just $399.

If you still can’t decide whether to invest in the OFFLOADER 16X, ClouZen has a β€œTrial Program.” In the Trial Program, you can make a $1,000 deposit to try it out for three weeks. After that, ClouZen refunds $700, resulting in a three-week trial costing $300, including shipping, pickup, and logistics.
