Blackmagic Camera 10.2 Update Released – PYXIS 6K Gains Phase Detect Autofocus and Cloud Stream Routing

Blackmagic Design has released the Blackmagic Camera 10.2 update, which finally brings phase detect autofocus to the PYXIS 6K as a public, non-beta feature. The same update also adds Blackmagic Cloud stream routing to the camera, letting operators push a live feed straight into a studio or to multiple platforms at once.

For PYXIS 6K owners, this is the update that turns a long-promised capability into a shipping one. Phase detect autofocus first reached the camera back in March as a test build (v10.0.3), and we covered that early release at the time. With version 10.2, the feature graduates out of the testing stage and arrives in a stable, publicly available form alongside a new cloud streaming workflow.

Phase detect autofocus arrives for real

The headline addition is phase detect autofocus (PDAF) for the PYXIS 6K. This is the same sensor-based system that calculates distance directly off the imaging sensor, which means faster, more stable subject acquisition and far less of the hunting behavior associated with contrast-detection approaches. The move was anticipated: when Blackmagic Design introduced PDAF to the Cinema Camera 6K, the company confirmed the PYXIS 6K was next in line, given that both bodies share the same full-frame 6K Bayer sensor.

The update adds continuous autofocus, so the camera can keep a moving subject sharp without manual intervention. There is also face detect autofocus, which locks onto a detected face, and object detect autofocus, which follows a user-selected subject as it moves through the frame. These are the modes that matter most for solo operators, documentary work, and any situation where pulling focus by hand is impractical.

Blackmagic Design has also built in finer control over how the autofocus behaves. Version 10.2 adds autofocus transition speed settings, letting operators dial in how quickly the camera racks between focus targets, which is useful for keeping focus pulls cinematic rather than abrupt. The update further allows assigning an autofocus mode toggle to shortcut keys, and introduces the ability to pause continuous autofocus by holding down the focus button, giving shooters a quick way to override the system mid-take.

Blackmagic Cloud stream routing comes to PYXIS 6K

The second major addition is support for Blackmagic Cloud stream routing on the PYXIS 6K. This lets you route a live stream from the camera directly into your studio, or stream to multiple destinations simultaneously through Blackmagic Cloud. For productions already invested in the Blackmagic ecosystem, this extends the camera’s role from an acquisition tool into a live source that can feed remote workflows without additional hardware in the signal path.

This continues the steady expansion of the PYXIS 6K’s connectivity story. Earlier updates added remote control via the Blackmagic Camera app and, more recently, the Camera 10.0 release brought extended pre-record and 4-channel audio to the PYXIS line. The 10.2 update slots neatly into that trajectory, with Blackmagic continuing to concentrate its development attention on the PYXIS cameras.

Availability

Blackmagic Camera 10.2 is available now as a free download from the Blackmagic Design support page. As with previous firmware releases, it is worth exporting your presets and LUTs before installing, since these can be reset during the update process.

Now that PYXIS 6K autofocus has moved from test build to a full public release, are you ready to lean on it for run-and-gun work? Don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments below!
