Godox Geniusmic - Directional Smartphone Mic, Now Available for iPhone

Godox Geniusmic is a compact directional microphone for smartphones. It comes in three versions – with a 3.5mm jack, USB-C, or Lightning connector – and it features an additional 3.5mm headphone jack at the back for monitoring. All three versions of the mic are available now including a foam cover and a furry windshield. Depending on the version, the price ranges from $38 to $59.

The Chinese company Godox not only makes lights but has also started on audio equipment, as well. In the last few weeks, for example, we have seen the VDS-M2 shotgun microphone as well as the MoveLink LT1 and UC1 wireless microphones for smartphones. Last year, the company also announced a tiny directional mic for smartphones called Geniusmic. Now it seems that the LT version for iPhones became available as well. Let’s take a look at all the details.

Godox Geniusmic

As mentioned above, Geniusmic is a tiny directional microphone – it only weighs 41g and is 80mm long. It plugs directly into the smartphone and that’s why there are three versions of the mic:

  • Geniusmic – standard version with a 3.5mm male jack for smartphones that still have it
  • Geniusmic UC – version with a USB-C connector for most android phones
  • Geniusmic LT – version with a Lightning connector for Apple iPhones

According to Godox, the microphone has a solid aluminum body that prevents RF disturbance when recording. The mic features a super-cardioid pattern that should pick up clear sounds in front of the capsule while attenuating ambient sounds.

The signal-noise ratio of the Geniusmic is 75dB (70dB for the Genusmic LT) and the audio frequency range is 50Hz to 20kHz. The microphone’s sensitivity (of the 3.5mm jack and the USB-C versions) is -33dB±2dB, RL=680Ω, Vs=1.5V. In case of the LT version, Godox claims that the sensitivity is -38dB±3dB (0dB = 1V/Pa 1kHz) (testing condition: 2V/2.2K).

The Geniusmic is directly powered by the smartphone, so using it should be an easy plug-and-play operation. The good thing is that the mic features a 3.5mm headphone jack connector at the back of the capsule which can be used for real-time monitoring.

Price and availability

The Godox Geniusmic (3.5mm jack/USB-C versions) has been available for a while now for $39/$38 respectively. The LT version should be available now as well for $59. The good thing is that every Geniusmic comes with a foam cover and a furry windshield.
