KanDao AR Cam FreeView Shooting System Released - Easy Use Bullet Time Rig

Chinese manufacturer KanDao recently released an interesting shooting system: the AR Cam FreeView. This system is composed of 9 to 60 interconnected cameras that allow you to create a “bullet time” rig with a maximum resolution of 4K at 60 frames per second. So let’s take a closer look at this shooting system!

KanDao is specialized in making 360 cameras and VR live-streaming systems. We previously reviewed their QooCam 8K 360 camera, which offers an impressive price/feature/size ratio. Now, just ahead of NAB 2023, the company has announced a “bullet time” shooting system: the AR Cam FreeView.

KanDao AR Cam FreeView – features

The KanDao AR Cam FreeView is a small, lightweight camera that measures 117.5 x 58 x 65.5mm and weighs 288g/10.1oz. The camera has a built-in lens, but there is currently no information available on it.

You won’t find a screen on the camera; there are only three status LEDs on the back. Input/output ports are also on the back, including:

  • A PoE/LAN RJ45 port.
  • Two USB-C Sync In and Sync Out ports.
  • One USB-C and one UART USB Type-C port.
  • A microSD memory card slot.

There is a 1/4″-20 mounting point on the bottom of the camera.

Each camera is powered/connected via RJ45 cables, and then daisy-chained and synchronized together through USB-C cables.

The AR Cam FreeView can record footage in UHD 4K at up to 60fps. In addition, footage is recorded in H.264/H.265 MP4 format up to 10-bit at 100Mbps. You can connect from 9 to 60 cameras together to create “bullet time” effects.

Software control

The KanDao AR Cam FreeView comes with dedicated computer software that lets you adjust your camera settings – shutter speed, ISO, frame rate, resolution and white balance – and calibrate all the cameras together.

By using multiple cameras, you can recreate the famous “The Matrix” Bullet Time effect or just slow-mo the scene.

According to KanDao, the FreeView Studio software lets you “record and edit free-view footage. It provides powerful multi-camera calibration technology so that the preview switching is smoother during recording. It also has a high-degree-of-freedom editing function, which allows more exciting Bullet Time clip output.”

Last but not least, you can also live stream on social media, which could create interesting setups for interviews.

Price and availability

There is currently no information regarding the price or availability of the KanDao AR Cam FreeView shooting system, but we will update this article as soon as we learn more about it.
