NANLITE PJ-BM 19/36 Projection Bowens-Mount Attachment Released

NANLITE has just released a new accessory compatible with all its Bowens-mount LED fixtures: the NANLITE PJ-BM 19/36. This projection attachment features an interchangeable 19° or 36° front lens to change your beam angle, and it can take Gobos. So let’s take a closer look at it!

On the footstep of the Forza 150 launch last week, NANLITE has just released its first projection attachment for Bowens-mount LED lights: the PJ-BM 19/36.

NANLITE PJ-BM 19/36 features

The NANLITE PJ-BM 19/36 is a projection attachment with a removable/interchangeable front lens. You’ll have the choice to get either the 19° or 36° kit, but you can purchase the other front lens later if you need it.

The PJ-BM 19/36 is mainly made of metal, with a weight of 4.2kg/9.26lbs without a front lens. However, once you add a 19° (3.8kg/8.38lbs) or 36° (3.1kg/6.83lbs) lens, you’ll quickly be close to 7.3kg/16.1lbs minimum.

It’s a lot of weight for a Bowens-mount light modifier; that’s why the PJ-BM 19/36 features its own yoke with a Junior pin and 5/8″ Baby Pin receiver. You’ll mount the NANLITE PJ-BM 19/36 to your light stand and then attach your LED fixture to the light modifier. This design won’t put too much stress on your LED light’s Bowens-mount.

The PJ-BM 19/36 front element features a built-in gel holder. There are also four shapers at the back of the projection attachment to precisely cut your beam of light.

Also, you can remove the shapers to insert a Gobo Type-B (86mm x 64.5 mm), which is industry-standard. Gobos are used to create specific shapes. The most famous – and utilized – Gobos are windows, trees, and blinds.

The PJ-BM 19/36 comes with four Gobos and a Gobo frame.

NANLITE PJ-BM 19/36 optional accessories

NANLITE also released a couple of optional accessories designed explicitly for the PJ-BM 19-36, which includes:

  • AS-GB-B-SET1 and AS-GB-B-SET2: these are sets of 10 Gobos.
  • PJ-BM-AI: this is an adjustable iris to create very precise circle shapes.
  • The 19° and 36° front elements that you can purchase individualy

An Aputure Spotlight Mount competitor?

You’ll probably notice that the PJ-BM 19/36 looks very similar to the Aputure Spotlight Mount released two years ago.

Indeed, both light modifiers offer interchangeable 19° and 36° front lenses, they attach to Bowens-mount LED fixtures, they feature built-in shapers, they take Gobo Type-B, and so on. The main difference between the two that I can find is that the NANLITE projection attachment is slightly lighter.

Price and availability

The NANLITE PJ-BM 19/36 will be available in December for $629 with the 19° lens and $599 with the 36° one. The projection attachment comes in a dedicated hard case.

As a direct comparison, the Aputure Spotlight Mount is $499 with either the 19°, 26°, or 36° lens.
