Unlimited Music Subscription – A New Era?

Recently, we can see that the music licensing platforms are moving more and more towards monthly or annual subscription plans. For example, this is the case with Musicbed, Music Vine, or, more recently, Audiio.

This new trend gives filmmakers and content creators access to thousands of songs for the licensing cost of only four to five tracks a couple of years ago.  I have no doubts that these licensing plans are the future, and we can’t stop it. Having an unlimited number of licenses per year and being able to use these songs for nearly every kind of project is an advantage for filmmakers.

But, what about the earnings of musicians that create those tracks? The earnings per download, which are ten to a hundred times less than a tailormade score, can’t be compared to the “traditional way.” Will it keep growing? Only the future will tell us, but until then, Shutterstock is joining the game.

Shutterstock Annual Unlimited Music Subscription

Shutterstock, a company that is better known for licensing photo/video/VFX stock media, just announced the launch of its own annual music subscription plan. This yearly plan gives you access to the entire catalog of tracks they have. You can download as many songs as you want, which is perfect for filmmakers/YouTubers/content creators, backed by a Standard license.

The Shutterstock Standard license includes:

  • Unlimited web distribution.
  • Video production up to a $10,000 budget.
  • Legal indemnification up to $10,000.

With the Standard license, you can use the music for your clients, and recoupe a portion of the annual plan’s cost by charging for the music. Otherwise, you own the license, and you can’t transfer it to your client. In short, it means that they don’t “own” the music and can’t re-use the music for another project by someone else.

In addition to this new annual unlimited music subscription, Shutterstock introduced new keyboard shortcuts to its website. These shortcuts allow you to skip forward/backward in the same track, or move to the next track on the list. This function should save you time when you are searching for the perfect song for your project.
