ZITAY CFexpress Type B to SSD Adapter Released

ZITAY CFexpress Type B to SSD Adapter Released

Chinese camera accessories manufacturer ZITAY has just released a CFexpress Type B to SSD adapter that allows you to record on external (and usually cheaper!) NVME M.2 drives rather than regular CFexpress Type B cards. The adapter is available now and retails for $43.99.

When it comes to RAW video recording, CFexpress Type B cards have rapidly become the de-facto standard, being adopted by many mirrorless and digital cinema cameras. These include the RED V-RAPTOR, Nikon Z 9, Canon R5 and R5 C, and Panasonic LUMIX GH6, just to name a few.

These cards offer blazingly-fast read and write speeds and even exist in very high capacities, like the class-leading 4TB Angelbird AV PRO MK2, for example. However, they usually don’t come cheap. That’s why ZITAY is coming up with a cost-effective alternative that also replaces their existing dummy-card solution. Let’s find out!

ZITAY CFexpress Type B to SSD Adapter – features

In a nutshell, the ZITAY CFexpress Type B to SSD Adapter is an aluminum case that enables you to use a third-party NVME M.2 2230 SSD drive in place of a standard CFexpress Type B card. Capacity being equal, solid-state drives are normally cheaper than their CFexpress Type B counterparts, thus making this adapter a budget-friendly storage solution.

However, the SSD is not included, so you need to source and install that yourself. The company recommends picking up the Kioxia (TOSHIBA) 1TB BG4 or 1TB SK Hynix BC711 drives, which they tried and tested, but unfortunately don’t grant compatibility with other SSD brands and models.

In order to help with heat dissipation, the adapter is built using aerospace-grade aluminum. According to the company, it supports read and write speeds of up to 1800MB/s and 1200MB/s respectively. The recommended SSD drives are actually faster than that, so the adapter becomes the bottleneck here.

What’s in the box?

ZITAY includes an installation kit to help you mount the drive inside the housing. The kit consists of:

  • 1x CFexpress Type B Card to SSD Adapter
  • Thermal grease
  • 2x tiny screws
  • Tiny screwdriver
  • 3x sticky notes

Price and availability

The new ZITAY CFexpress Type B Card to NVME M.2 SSD Adapter is now available to purchase from the manufacturer’s website. Its official retail price is set at $43.99, while the recommended SSD drives can be found online for about $250.
