Apple Final Cut Pro 10.7 for Mac and 1.3 for iPad Announced – Workflow and Performance Improvements

Apple has just announced a new update for Final Cut Pro, adding enhancements to timeline navigation, voiceover recording, and more content inside the iPad version. Let’s take a look at those new features!

Following their procedure of constantly updating and improving their products, Apple announced a new update for their lead NLE software. Final Cut Pro 10.7 focuses on a better experience for editors with new features to streamline workflow, and it takes advantage of Apple M1 / M2 / M3 processors to improve performance and speed while editing and exporting.

What’s new in Final Cut Pro for Mac

As we mentioned, the two main areas of improvement in this version are organizational tools and optimized for Apple silicon.

In the first area, Apple has introduced a new automatic timeline scrolling feature, which helps keep everything in sight when editing complex projects. Now, we can adjust the timeline with the zoom tool or the keyboard during playback.

With this update, we can add colors to our video and audio roles, so it’s easier to see and organize clips. Also, connecting clips and combining them into a single storyline will allow to clean up complex timelines and make them easier to work with.

Regarding optimization for Apple silicon, this Final Cut Pro 10.7 update improves H.264 and HEVC export times. The program can process simultaneous video parts by sending them to available media engines. Finally, the Object Tracker works more accurately and faster with this update when using Apple processors.

What’s new in Final Cut Pro 1.3 for iPad

The iPad version will benefit users with new tools to manage the post production process from beginning to end. We can now record audio directly in the timeline with internal or external microphones. We can start recording while playing back, or set up a countdown at a determined place on the timeline. Stabilization has also been added in the pro-camera mode, as well as connected storylines to make our workflow more manageable. New color-grading presets, titles and generators, and keyboard shortcuts for voiceover and grouping clips also go in this direction of making things easier for creatives.

Finally, Final Cut Pro 1.3 for iPad opens new possibilities thanks to the ability to import projects from iMovie and export projects to Mac to further refine our final videos.

Price and availability

The new Final Cut Pro 10.7 for Mac and Final Cut Pro for iPad 1.3 will be available within the next few days.

The Mac version will be (still!) available as a free update for existing users and will sell at $299 for new users. It’s remarkable that Apple has not once charged an extra update fee for the Mac version of Final Cut Pro (then: Final Cut Pro X) since it was introduced in 2011, over 12 years ago. So if you paid the fee once back then, you were able to constantly have an up-to-date version of Final Cut Pro at zero extra cost, which is quite a departure from what Adobe is doing with their Premiere (and other) subscriptions, and it’s actually more similar to what Blackmagic Design is offering with DaVinci Resolve Studio.

The iPad version of Final Cut Pro will cost $4.99 per month or $49 per year, with a one-month free trial available. Remember that this version is compatible with M1 chip iPad models or later, and you need iPadOS 16.6 to make it work.

What do you think about these new updates? Will they improve your workflow? Let us know in the comments!
