Canon EOS C70 Firmware Update v1.0.5.1 - 4K Intra Recording Options and Eye AF

Canon has just announced an upcoming firmware update v1.0.5.1, for its EOS C70 cinema camera. This new update includes support for Canon’s XC Protocol, a new Custom Picture profile called Canon 709, Face and Eye Detection AF and tracking in both slow and fast shooting modes, and a new 4K Intra recording option. So let’s take a closer look at this new firmware coming early next month!

The Canon EOS C70 was introduced nearly two years ago and has been regularly updated since then. Earlier this year, Canon launched the firmware update v1.0.3.1 that added internal Canon RAW Light recording capabilities.

The upcoming firmware update v1.0.5.1 is already the fifth firmware update for the EOS C70, which is always lovely to see. This one will add multiple features to the compact Canon RF cinema camera.

Our friends and partners at CVP did an excellent video you can watch below that covers everything you need to know about that new firmware update.

Canon EOS C70 Firmware Update v1.0.5.1 – what’s new?

The Canon EOS C70 firmware update v1.0.5.1 adds some interesting new features. First, the update includes support for Canon’s XC Protocol, which allows integration into multi-camera solutions easily. You’ll gain control of the C70 via Canon’s RC-IP100 remote camera controller and the remote camera control application.

Next, there is a new Custom Picture Profile called Canon 709. This Canon709 picture profile is pretty similar to my all-time favorite WideDR picture profile, but with more contrast/saturation and without using super-white to avoid issues with range conversion.

The firmware update also introduces new 4K Intra recording options up to 60P/50P at 600Mbps. These new Intra recording options will go along the current XF-AVC Intra 410Mbps codec.

Autofocus and other improvements

I always had difficulties understanding why the EOS C70 did not have Eye Detection autofocus, especially since the Canon EOS R5 C had these features. With this firmware update, the EOS C70 will finally benefit from Eye Detection AF! Of course, as shown in CVP’s video, it is not as good as Canon’s mirrorless cameras, but it’s a much-welcomed addition.

The firmware update supports the new Canon Flex Zoom cinema lenses and the Cine-Servo CN8x15 IAS S lens. Lastly, you’ll now be able to monitor up to four audio channels in the on-screen meter display.

Availability

The Canon EOS C70 firmware update v1.0.5.1 will be available from Canon’s website in early December.

What do you think about all the new features added to the Canon EOS C70? Did you already shoot with the C70? What feature are you still missing from the small Canon RF cinema camera? Don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments down below!
