Godox WEC Compact Dual-Mic Wireless System Announced

The Godox WEC system is an extremely compact dual-mic wireless system (2.4 GHz). Weighing only 12gr (per transmitter) and very easy to operate, it aims squarely at independent content creators working with compact cameras or smartphones. Let’s have a look at this dual-mic wireless system!

Specs and features

It seems like the leading feature is the WEC’s compact size, but it’s not the only one. The miniature fixture manages to provide 8 hours of battery life to each component, and a total of 24 hours with the support of the included charging case. The operational range is 200 meters (as stated by the manufacturer, so a grain of salt might fit here). The unit is fairly basic, including 6-level gain control and “intelligent noise cancellation”. Effectiveness is yet to be determined, but the system should suppress ambient noise and emphasize speech. The mic-transmitters do not contain any physical output. The receiver has one mic output for either camera, smartphone, or any other recording option.

Who is it for?

The Godox WEC is made for content creators. Ease of use, compactness, and an affordable price will make it an excellent starter system. The WEC will immediately improve the audio coming from most built-in camera/smartphone mics but will lack some important features for advanced creators, who want a higher level of control over audio recording.

Alternatives

The compact wireless market has gotten pretty crowded in recent years, and it now seems as if a new segment has arisen: Super-compact, wireless mic systems. some of these are aimed exclusively at smartphone creators, and some can also connect to a camera. The Ulanzi J12 is an iOS-only device (but there’s also an Android version). With a price tag of $42, it’s on the affordable side and it’s much more basic, lacking gain control, noise cancellation, or audio output. Many options are available in the sub-$100 range. The Hollyland LARK M1 DUO might fit your bill. The LARK DUO is fairly similar with the same outputs, battery life, and overall size. It also has some sort of noise-cancellation feature. At the top, in terms of both quality and price, we’ll find the Sony ECM W3. Though made especially for Sony cameras, this mic can also connect to smartphones and other devices and offers a relatively wide range of controls at a premium price. If this is your scope, you might as well consider the new RØDE Wireless PRO with 32-bit internal recording and more.
