Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 24mm f/1.7 Lens Announced

Nikon just added a new wide-angle APS-C prime lens to their lineup, the NIKKOR Z 24mm f/1.7. It features a fast aperture, a compact and lightweight design, an STM autofocus motor, and more. It retails for $280.

Nikon’s Z mount mirrorless ecosystem is growing at a constant, fast pace. The yellow company recently introduced the Z 8 full-frame camera, which packs most of the features of the flagship Z 9 in a more compact body and plans to introduce 50+ lenses by 2025.

Their glass lineup welcomed two new full-frame primes at the beginning of this year – the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S and 26mm f/2.8 – which are now joined by a 24mm f/1.7 lens for the APS-C format. Let’s take a quick look!

Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 24mm f/1.7 – overview

The NIKKOR Z DX 24mm f/1.7 is a tiny prime lens that is specifically engineered for Nikon Z mount mirrorless cameras featuring an APS-C (DX) sensor. This means that it’s currently compatible with the Nikon Z fc, Z 50 and the vlogging-oriented Z 30.

When paired with a Nikon DX crop sensor, the lens offers a field of view of 61°. Moreover, its fast f/1.7 aperture allows you to nicely isolate your subject from the background and is also a great ally for low light scenarios.

The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 18cm/0.59ft, allowing you to achieve interesting wide-angle close-up views of your subjects. Moreover, the front of the lens has a 46mm thread for screw-on filters, which is an essential feature for video shooters, who can also benefit from a quiet STM autofocus motor, Nikon says.

Optical and physical design

The optical scheme of the NIKKOR Z DX 24mm f/1.7 consists of 9 elements organized in 8 groups and includes two aspherical elements. The fast f/1.7 aperture has a 7-blade design that should result in a smooth background bokeh.
