RED has recently rolled out a new firmware update for its V-RAPTOR and KOMODO-X cameras. Among many changes, firmware 2.2.4 improves boot times for both models and reduces power consumption for the V-RAPTOR platform. The update is now available for free download.
While we haven’t really seen any new cameras from RED following the acquisition by Nikon – except for Z mount variants of V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO-X and the V-RAPTOR XE, which is essentially a stripped-down version of the flagship V-RAPTOR [X] – firmware 2.2.4 aims at strengthening the capabilities of the DSMC3 lineup via a series of performance and stability improvements. Let’s take a closer look!
RED cameras have always been notoriously slow upon starting up, and the latest DSMC3 models are no exception. Firmware 2.2.4 brings a significant improvement in this regard by reducing boot time by approximately 40% compared to the previous firmware. I ran a quick test on my KOMODO-X, and the camera is now up and running in about 19 seconds.
On top of this, the new firmware reduces the power draw of V-RAPTOR cameras, making them less power-hungry by up to 5W. This may seem like a marginal improvement, but it can actually make a difference in battery life during a long shooting day.
Other relevant improvements include the ability to use the touchscreen of the RED DSMC3 monitor to smoothly adjust the intensity of the filter inside RED’s PL Electronic ND Adapter, an improved focus peaking algorithm, and support for industry-standard test pattern output over SDI for on-set display alignment and calibration checks.
During live productions, support for External Tally trigger has been added, so the camera can start and stop recording full-resolution footage to the CFexpress card only for the time it’s on air, while continuously providing an SDI signal to the video switcher.
For virtual production with the V-RAPTOR [X] and XL [X], it’s now possible to set independent shutter angles for the camera-ready VFX and the green screen stream when using the Phantom Track feature.
