RevCut.io - European GDPR-Friendly Quick Video Review Platform Launched

RevCut.io is a minimalist online review and delivery platform focused on client feedback. It offers a simple workflow, including guest access for clients who do not need to create an account. For filmmakers with clients based in Europe, the platform promises a GDPR-friendly approach as it only stores data on servers in Europe. Available from €3 per month, RevCut seems to be an affordable video review platform for freelancers. Additionally, you can save 20% on the Pro plan with a CineD discount code.

The demand for better online team collaboration, client feedback, and interaction has been present in our industry for many years. That said, I feel like the COVID-19 pandemic and the related lockdowns and social distancing in the years 2020-2022 further accelerated this trend, along with the development of supporting tools. Today, it’s difficult to imagine a professional filmmaking workflow functioning without a collaboration and client review platform such as frame.io.

The recently launched online platform RevCut.io focuses on introducing a minimalistic, affordable, and GDPR-friendly video review tool for filmmakers based in Europe. Let’s take a look at the details.

RevCut.io – European GDPR-friendly video review platform

RevCut is designed to be a streamlined “Review/Validation & Delivery” bridge built specifically for solo freelancers and small teams who need a tool that is fast, affordable, and GDPR-friendly. It needs to be simple enough for any client to use. The workflow is kept intentionally simple: One project = One client. Within each project, users organize videos such as social edits, highlights, or the main cut, together with their different versions.

The main idea behind the RevCut.io platform, as its creator Frankie Doguet told us, is to offer a straightforward online video review solution for filmmakers based in Europe who require a GDPR-friendly option for handling client data. Many popular tools in this field use cloud services with servers located in U.S. data centers. For some clients, that raises questions about data protection, since privacy regulations there differ from the more standardized GDPR framework in Europe.

Frankie Doguet, a filmmaker based in Berlin, is the one-man band behind the platform, having coded RevCut.io (RevCut stands for “Review the Cut”) himself as a minimalist review and delivery tool. As he told us, he built the platform sticking to a few principles:

  • GDPR-friendly approach – all content is hosted exclusively on servers in Europe (obviously, only beneficial for filmmakers with clients based in Europe).
  • No friction – thanks to guest access, clients can review and leave feedback without having to create an account.
  • No bloat – the tool focuses purely on review; there is not a wide variety of features. As a result, the tool remains fairly affordable for freelancers.
  • Built-in delivery – RevCut enables you to send final high-res masters to clients once the edit is approved. There is no need to use a different platform (such as WeTransfer).

Minimalistic approach focusing purely on review

RevCut is an intentionally streamlined tool and focused solely on video review. It supports compressed files in MP4 or MOV containers but does not offer ProRes support or server-side transcoding.

There is currently no option to batch upload multiple files. Drag-and-drop functionality and folder uploads are also not supported. Some of these features are expected to be added in the near future.

New features coming soon

RevCut creator Frankie Doguet told us he plans to soon update the platform with the following features:

  • Batch upload & drag-and-drop (high priority).
  • Direct version stacking. Currently, adding a new version is only possible via the project dashboard. In the future, the ability to upload new versions (V2, V3) directly from the review page interface will be added, so users do not have to switch contexts.
  • Download permission switch. A toggle to allow or block downloads. This is crucial to protect creators from clients downloading work before final payment.
  • Data portability/batch download. A “Download All” button at the project and video card level will be added. This allows creators to back up a full project or retrieve all versions of a cut in one click.
  • Image watermark. Currently, it is text-only, but logo/image support is coming.
  • Video thumbnails. For better visual navigation on the dashboard.
  • Comment editing. A fix is coming soon to enable editing of the added comments.

Naturally, it makes sense to evaluate a platform based on what’s available right now rather than on promised updates. Still, it’s interesting to know what’s planned as it helps put the program’s current limitations into perspective.

The platform creator also told us what RevCut will not have and why:

  • No ProRes/server transcoding. It requires heavy processing, which slows down uploads and drastically increases costs. By sticking to MP4 (web-optimized) workflows, the service can remain affordable and upload fast.
  • No complex folders & team management. RevCut is not designed to compete with large and complex platforms such as Frame.io or Krock.io.
