Shane Hurlbut, ASC & Canon Bring You "The Last Three Minutes"

April 19th, 2010

This short has been around for a little while but is worth checking out if you have not seen it yet. “The Last Three Minutes”  Shot by Shane Hurlbut, ASC shows what you can do with the HDSLR’s and some serious coin. Everything in this short has fantastic production value. The short was shot with the Canon 5D Mark II to showcase the new 24P firmware update. There is a very cool behind the scenes video on Canon’s site.

This is over a year old and better. http://vimeo.com/4155700

It’s one thing to do something about the last seconds/minutes of someones life, fine, pretty cool but the same EVERYTHING?

Not cool

I love this piece. Fuck all the haters who don’t shoot nothing but garbage but that’s often the case. The Last 3 Minutes is simple and well done. The footage is super clean and once again shows that content is king and that 24p is overrated.

God it’s a lame story… the crystal? Come on! It all feels a little bit contrived, like the demo function on a casio keyboard, you get to see everything it can do, and that’s great, but really, the story was pretty lame. No doubt he knows what he’s doing with the camera though.

I’m no Shane Hurlbut lover, but this short looks great. Just because he decided to put it together shortly after the firmware update doesn’t mean the point is strictly to show off 24p. Story always comes first, and the 30p slowed to 24 makes sense. True, it’s not the most original piece, but shorts like this continue to legitimize the DSLR revolution that we are all involved with, particularly when they’re shot by an ASC DP. Finally, I think we should all take some time to thank Jared. God only knows how many hours he puts into posting the news that you and I take for granted. Cut him a break about seeing the same story in two different places. He hooks us all up BIGTIME!

again ,, he says we negotiated to get canon to spend some coin on this short especially to show what the new 24p firmware can do .. then the next sentence he says, oh … only the guy at the start was shot in 24p .. most of it was shot in 30p … so what are they doing shooting 30p if the whole point was to shoot in 24p to promote 5d 24p ???

i dont think this warrants being promoted AGAIN ! … as many posters on cinema5d have already said .. its been done many times before and BETTER ! …

Hey 2Bcool2,

Post a link to your work, I am really excited to see what you are doing, you seem to have an eye on quality. I do want to learn from people who are critical of quality.

Looking forward to it :)

Dear Shane,
Whatever others say, how many times this idea of the last moments of someone’s life has been done before, the film you made is fantastic! I am a fan! I appreciate the work you’ve done and I love the way you tell the story. If I would live in the US I would come over to work with you! Thanks for the passion, respect!

I personally liked the pace of this one a bit better.

This one is also very good. I’m pretty sure thats Pauley Shore punching the camera. Goes to show nothing is original.

this is cool and no disrespect to shane but “never” and a bunch of other shots are better examples of what DSLR’s can do
