OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO Announced

OM SYSTEM recently released a new prime lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras: the M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO. This macro lens has a 2x magnification ratio, it features 5-axis image stabilization and IP53 weather sealing. So let’s take a closer look at all the specifications of this new OM SYSTEM glass!

In September 2021, OM Digital Solutions published its lens roadmap for the following years, with what looked like a “to-be-determined” macro lens in the 75-150mm macro range. The wait is finally over, and the group has just launched the M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO. Before we dive deeper into all the specifications, you can watch the introduction and first-look video of our partners and friends at B&H.

OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO – features

The M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO is a Micro Four Thirds Lens, which is a 180mm full-frame equivalent. As its name suggests, it is part of OM SYSTEM’s PRO lineup of lenses, has a maximum aperture of F3.5, and has built-in 5-axis image stabilization.

The lens weighs 453g/1lb and measures 7×13.6cm, which is reasonable for a lens of its kind. You’ll find a focus limiter switch on the lens, a switch to turn the image stabilization On/Off, and a customizable function button.

To switch from Auto to Manual focus, you must pull on the focus clutch mechanism that reveals magnification and focus distance markings on the lens barrel.

As part of the PRO lineup, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO features an IP53 splash and dustproof, and the entire lens is freezeproof down to 14°F/-10°C.

According to OM SYSTEM, the lens “features an adept MSC (Movie & Stills Compatible) autofocus system that achieves quick and quiet focusing performance with high accuracy.” Furthermore, it has an internal focusing design, so the lens does not extend/retract when focusing.

Lens design

The 90mm macro lens design consists of a whopping 18 elements in 13 groups, including two Super ED lenses, four ED lenses, one Super HR lens and one HR lens. All these lens elements are supposed to suppress chromatic aberration, and the out-of-focus areas should suffer from minimal color bleeding.

When it comes to coatings, the lens features ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating to eliminate unwanted ghosts, spot flaring and lens flares. Furthermore, the front element features a fluorine coating to help with moisture/dirt/oils on the front element and makes it easy to clean the lens using a cloth/blower.

The aperture diaphragm consists of seven round aperture blades. The minimum focusing distance is only 8.8″/22.4cm, which is a 2x magnification. Also, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO can be used with the optional MC-14 and MC-20 teleconverters, increasing the maximum magnification to 2.8x or 4x, respectively. Last but not least, the lens has a front filter size of 62mm.
