CINELUX will soon launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of its latest product, the REDUXA R2. This 0.71x focal reducer mount is designed specifically to optimize the use of full-frame glass on RED DSMC2 camera bodies. Let’s take a look!
RED officially discontinued the support for DSMC2 cameras and accessories two years ago in favour of the new DSMC3 lineup (V-RAPTOR / V-RAPTOR [X] / V-RAPTOR XE / KOMODO-X / KOMODO). Despite this fact, some users are so attached to the look and feel of their DSMC2 bodies that there’s still a demand for second-hand and third-party accessories.
Last year, UK-based company CINELUX launched the NEXA-MAG as a more modern alternative to the infamous RED MINI-MAG media. Now, as they claim, they’re back with “the focal reducer that RED never made”.
The CINELUX REDUXA R2 is a 0.71x focal reducer that allows you to benefit from a wider field of view when using full-frame lenses on a RED DSMC2 body with a Super 35 sensor, while also gaining nearly 1 stop of light transmission.
The mount screws directly to the camera body and is compatible with almost all DSMC2 models, with a few exceptions. These include MONSTRO — which already has a large-format sensor, RAVEN — because of the fixed EF lens mount, and some very early units of DSMC2 DRAGON and SCARLET-W.
When it comes to speed boosters for RED DSMC2 cameras, the REDUXA R2 is one of the very few existing options. The only real alternative is the pricier ABT cine SpeedMount mk2 PL for DSMC2 mount.
The REDUXA R2 features a locking ring on the lens side and will be available in either Canon EF or ARRI PL mount options. The EF version supports full electronic communication with the camera, including lens metadata, while the PL variant will be offered as a mechanical-only adapter.
At the core of the REDUXA R2 is a Viltrox-designed 0.71x optical block featuring 5 elements in 4 groups. According to CINELUX, the Viltrox optical group offers a good balance of sharpness, contrast, and light transmission, while also being the best option to ensure the optics sit inside the lens mount perfectly centered with the image sensor. Moreover, the mount comes with a built-in, revered-engineered RED Standard OLPF.
Lastly, while the REDUXA R2 comes calibrated out of the factory, the mount has a built-in calibration mechanism that allows you to adjust the position of the optical block to perfectly match your setup by simply turning a screw.
The Kickstarter campaign for the CINELUX REDUXA R2 will go live on February 10th, 2026. The official retail price of the mount is $1,795 for the PL version and $1,895 for the EF model, but you can access VIP Access and Early Bird discounts by supporting the crowdfunding.
We are saying this at the end of every crowdfunding-related article: please be aware of the risks when backing a project on a crowdfunding platform. Please read the platform’s terms of use and keep in mind that there can be significant delays when delivering the product. Some projects even don’t get delivered at all.
