Go-To Lenses under $1,500 – Primes

Zoom lenses are very handy, but most of them lack speed. So if you’re a bit more particular about nice background separation, full manual focus racks, and lightweight yet very capable glass, you should look at the prime side of things.

At some point you may be ready to upgrade to another price range, but for intermediate shooters, a decent set from this price range is more than adequate for most tasks. Some lenses may still suffer a bit from nasties like focus breathing or color fringing, for the perfect lens you should look in the high-end category.

Of course, the sky’s the limit, and high-end cine prime lenses aren’t cheap. But for less than $1,500 you can get some very nice lenses to stock up your gear bag, and since glass, especially prime lenses, don’t age that quickly, you can most likely work with them for a very long time.
