DJI Joins L-Mount Alliance, Ronin 4D will get Apple ProRes 4444 XQ Support

DJI Joins L-Mount Alliance, Ronin 4D will get Apple ProRes 4444 XQ Support

DJI has shared some news regarding its Ronin 4D ecosystem: Not only will the gimbal stabilizer get support for Apple ProRes 4444 XQ recording later this year, but the company is also joining the L-Mount Alliance. This results in a new native L-Mount for the Zenmuse X9 gimbal camera. Last but not least, the company is also introducing a new extension cable for the Ronin 4D that allows the gimbal to be detached from the rest of the device.

Since the promised addition of internal ProRes RAW support for the Ronin 4D stabilization system didn’t materialize earlier this year (article here), DJI apparently wanted to offer its users something different instead.

ProRes 4444 XQ is the highest quality level of the ProRes family and will be implemented in the Ronin 4D by August this year.

Also new is the so-called Zenmuse X9 Extension Cable: It allows you to operate the Zenmuse X9 gimbal camera separately from the main body of the Ronin 4D. This can be helpful for tight sets and/or complex shots. Just be aware that the Z-axis is gone in this setup, as it is part of the main body.

Although this reduces the size when only the camera and a 3-axis gimbal are needed, I don’t really understand the advantage. After all, the main body still has to be lugged around. Maybe the new DJI RS3 (Pro) would be better suited for such applications?

DJI joins the L-Mount Alliance

DJI also announced that they officially join the L-Mount Alliance, founded by Sigma, Leica and Panasonic. As a first result, the company has introduced a native L-Mount for the Zenmuse X9 gimbal camera. So users can now benefit of native Leica, Sigma and Panasonic L-Mount glass.
